I'm out. Two little words that have been inciting rage in card shedding games for generations. “I'm Out” is another fine entry into the CMYK Magenta line that can leave you feeling like a Rummy player with a hand full of face cards when the round ends....or it can leave you with riding the high of a Uno player who just played a draw 4 at the best possible moment.
Like most shedding games, I'm Out is about emptying your hand before anyone else. It uses a custom deck of 62 unsuited cards ranging from 2 to 13 with the distribution going heavy on the middle numbers (There are eight copies of the number 7 and only two copies of both 2 and 13). Players form a row of cards by playing as many cards as they want of the same number with the caveat that they must play at least as many cards as the stack next to it. If a player can't (or doesn't want to) play to either side of the row that is formed, they take a card from the row and they are “out” for this round. Once all players are out, the row is discarded and a new one is started. This can leave you with interesting decisions when you can play but you wonder if it would be more advantageous to pass, take an extremely low or high card that you have a match for in your hand, and hope to get it out early the next round.

I'm Out is simple to teach/learn which leaves plenty of time for you to just enjoy the flow of the game. It also has the added level of strategy that slowly reveals itself after repeated plays that can leave you asking for just one more game. Whenever the round is over, it is the last active player who is allowed to start the new row of cards, so planning your turns should revolve around being able to leave yourself in this enviable position. You will also have to be aware of when you do leave the round and take a card to add to your hand, you can be leaving another player in a prime spot to play from their hand that was impossible the turn before.

I'm Out can be played with 3 to 6 players with the number of starting cards dealt to players being the only real change to set-up. Unfortunately, this does leave out anyone looking for a two-player version. I, personally, prefer to play at four or five players but having another game in your arsenal for when a sixth player shows up to game night means you never have to leave anyone out or split into groups.

Once you get past the “Oh, it's like Uno!” phase of learning I'm Out, it becomes much more about playing the other players at the table. Sure, you don't want to leave any cards in your hand. But the where and when to playing your cards and the decision of which card to take when you pass and which to leave on the table can be the key to victory.

I'm Out is one of those great card games that hits on a higher level than it initially appears while still being dead simple enough that you can teach it and play it with virtually anyone. Break this out at game night and you'll be shedding cards like a tree sheds leaves in Autumn...but without all the messy clean up.
