Are you tired of super hero movies? Tired of heroes who whine and substitute a gravely voice for earnestness like Spider-man? Tired of heroes that are too wrapped up in themselves to even bother to save the innocent like Superman? Tired of heroes filled with self doubt who end up putting down the mantel of their responsibility and giving up the hero business like has happened in every damn sequel to every damn superhero movie ever made? Yah me too. Now I'm not saying that Captain America: Winter Soldier is without it's flaws. It has quick cut/shaky cam fights that are hard to follow. It runs long. The hero is nearly incapacitated by a wound one moment and is slugging away in the next. It has Samuel Jackson, who I find tedious as Nick Fury. But what it does have is a great story and message that actually hold together throughout the whole film. Those are two pretty rare things in any movie let alone one in this genre. The fights, although they do suffer from the sins mentioned previously, do have flashes of brilliance and are brutally engrossing. Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow is far more engaging here than in The Avengers. Her character is far more defined and more importantly interesting. Chris Evans does a great job of portraying the goodness of Cap without making him seem naive. It's still a super hero movie but it's a damn good one. One of the best.
