Wow. That was one intense film. This actor, Miles Teller, blew me away in The Spectacular Now a couple summers ago and this is an even bigger performance. Melissa Benoist is my new secret crush and I can't wait to see more of her stuff her in more stuff. J.K. Simmons of course is perfectly cast. Good luck recognizing Paul Reiser (Aliens, Mad About You) in this flick. I had no idea that was him.

Quick synopsis: Best music school in the country. Very capable musician that a teacher sees incredible potential in. Teacher decides to push and push in order to make the greatness come out. And then of course when you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you.

It's just a fantastic film, really. It asks some tough questions. It says volumes about Miles Teller in that there's a scene where he makes a difficult decision that I would normally totally disagree with. But because I so was into his performance, I totally understood and reasoned along with him on why he'd make this choice. It's rare that I'm in a character's head like that. This is one of those movies where it's great to grab a pint or coffee right after and talk about it. It's hard not to understand why each character acts the way they do. Everything seems justifiable. Loved this movie.

Heart rating: 5 stars

Brain rating: 4.5 stars (I think the screenwriters made too easy a decision during the film's climax, I don't think things always need to be this over the top).

Highly recommended

Miles Teller has the potential of being a BIG on screen presence for years to come. I'm glad this movie may bring him more well deserved recognition (albeit no award).

Watched it again the other night. Fantastic. Without spoiling it, specifically, I love how the finale scene at the concert plays out, with Fletcher messing with the kid in yet another way.

The whole movie I would look over to my wife and say "Oh yeah, he's totally fucking with him now"

I just saw the movie and loved it, but I think your synopsis is a little too kind to J.K. Simmons' character. He may see potential in the kid, he may even believe that his harassing style is the best way to bring it out, but he's a self-centered, ego-maniacal prick through and through. The only reason he wants the kid to succeed is so that he'll get the accolades as his teacher.

I really liked it. I think you're right in that the Fletcher character was a bit too over the top, but it certainly made him compelling (not that Simmons isn't already a magnetic presence; the last 5 minutes of Burn After Reading are the best part of the whole film almost solely because of him.)

One of the more interesting reactions to Simmons' OTT role was this from Grantland: grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/oscar...ght-about-greatness/

The writer is a former music student who talks about who Fletcher was precisely not what most professors would be like because what they're looking for is much easier to discover. That said, I still think the film was great. It's a very simple story, but delivered with great energy and pacing (and in less than two hours!)

The part at the end where he slowly morphed into a Black Swan really took me by surprise.

Wait! That happened in Birdman too!!!!!!!!
