GenCon - General Gaming Rant
Gaming Scene I InfinityMax Updated January 28, 2015 7262   0
Ah, it’s that time of year again – GenCon week. You can smell the excitement in the air. For those of you who have not been here before, it smells like hair grease and buttcrack sweat. I freaking hate GenCon.

As many of you prepared for your annual trek to GenCon, I feel certain there are a bunch of you planning on making a beeline for the Alderac booth to pick your new, shiny copy of Doomtown Reloaded. And I can hardly blame you – Doomtown was one of the greatest CCGs I ever played, and to this day, remains my absolute favorite. Evil monsters, heroic undead, gunfights and horses and ghost rock – Doomtown was an Old West horror game that always left me half-wishing I could visit, and half-glad I couldn’t. And it wasn’t just the setting,...

Before I starting writing this review, I had to go back and find the review I wrote of its predecessor,  BattleCON. In case you’re wondering, I used the word ‘battle’ an awful lot when I write reviews. It took me half an hour to find the old review. For no reason I can understand, I found a review of a kiddie game called Best Day Ever that was the Worst Game Ever. Because I said ‘battle’ in that review.

There exists in any art form something called the vanity project. This is a thing where the creators want more than just to create a brilliant piece of art, they want to create something just so they can say, ‘dammit, look at me, I made this thing.’ Board games don’t see this a lot, unless you count the fact that every crappy game that ever gets produced has the designer’s name on the box. But I have seen one spectacular example, and it’s what happens when the world’s most popular (and sleep-inducing) reviewer decides to make a board game....

I’ve heard a lot of arguments equating well-designed games with fun games, yet I have no compunction about separating the two factors. I can think of plenty of examples of games that were well-designed and still not fun at all (I can’t stand Puerto Rico, for instance), but there aren’t many good examples of poorly designed games that were a blast to play. Which is why I was so glad to play Exodus Proxima Centauri, because now I have a good example.

With my daughter less than a year away from moving out of my house, I find myself casting about for any way to connect with her. She’s not game for all the stuff we used to do, like hanging her upside down and banging her head on the floor. For one thing, she’s too heavy for that now, and I’m not nearly as fit as I was when she was six. She doesn’t even want to play games with me any more, because she’s got her own friends who come over for that (they meet twice a month to...

If a game of high stakes and bloody retribution ye be wantin’, then look ye no further than that fair maiden of the oily abyss, Dread Curse. It be a pirate game of swipin’ booty and death hexes signed onto ye by the devilish voodoo queens and women whose mothers gave them ridiculous fake African names like L-a (pronounced ‘Ledasha’) and Demonica (these are real examples of real people with real names).

What you really need to enjoy this Halloween is a game that will terrify you, one that will make you want to scream in terror because it will be so terrible. Actually, wait, that is not what you need. I just checked, and you just need like, candy or something.

When I started Drake's Flames, Rio Grande used to send me a lot of games. Then they stopped, mostly because I was rather disparaging of one of their games. Then, several years later, I asked them for a particular game and they sent me three other games instead. This was my chance to make good, to get back in with one of the biggest game companies in the world so I could get free games from them again!

I know deckbuilding games are a fad. I know people are getting tired of them. I know how many people love to say, , great, another deckbuilder, yawn.' They actually say that. Or type it, anyway. They type 'yawn' as its own sentence. So condescending. I hope those people break their pelvises in skiing accidents.
