Watergate - A Five Second Board Game Review

4.0
Board Game Reviews M MasonSokol Updated August 08, 2019 1157   0

Game Information

Game Name
Watergate is yet another entry into the “Twilight Struggle but filler” camp that is really popular for some reason, but it is the first I’ve played that really escapes the shadow of its lineage. All of the cards are interesting, powerful, or both. They are evocative of the event being portrayed. When I play as Nixon and my opponent calls my cards “BS” it feels both true but also immersive. This makes the history exciting and it does that by not being afraid of letting individual games be swingy blowouts. That’s not to say the decisions don’t feel impactful;...
Century Golem Edition

Board Game Reviews M MasonSokol Updated August 08, 2019 933   0

Game Information

The recent announcement of the completion of the Century trilogy in Golem form had me returning to this gorgeous production and I was impressed with how much play this still has to it.
Wizard Card Game

5.0
Board Game Reviews M MasonSokol Updated July 26, 2019 1041   0

Game Information

Wizard presents itself in absolutely the same way that the most boring of mass market productions do, in an ugly box, sitting limply on a Walmart shelf, or introduced by your grandparents when they’ve run out of various political topics to run you through.
Captive Graphic Novel Adventures

Game Information

Captive is a story driven solo game in the form of a book that, from my view, makes nearly every wrong design descision.  The game blends a graphic novel with a choose your own adventure game, with slight RPG elements in the form of a character sheet.  Your choices mostly take the form of which door you want to go through in the house.  Very little exists in the way of clues as to which door is best to the point that you will often travel in circles because you didn’t realize you already came through that door.  There is a time mechanism...
Fort Sumter Board Game

3.0
Board Game Reviews M MasonSokol Updated July 13, 2019 1293   0

Game Information

Game Name
Fort Sumter is a game I’m somewhat conflicted about.  I don’t quite understand the process that led to such an abstracted design that still felt like it had weird restrictions as concessions to the source material.  It feels like it would be too abstract to please the grognards. but too stodgy to please casual gamers.

Escape Tales’ inagural entry is a mechanically smooth and fun experience with only minor hiccups.
Sekigahara Board Game

Board Game Reviews M MasonSokol Updated June 05, 2019 2217   0

Game Information

Sekigahara may seem like a souped up Stratego but instead presents a fascinating look of the orginizational level of the titular campaign.

Meltwater: A Game of Tactical Startvation

Meltwater is a neat two player wargame about tactically trying to starve your opponent in the middle of the now nuclear wasteland of Antarctica
