Now I Truly Get Magic Realm
Analysis GS Gary Sax Updated January 30, 2019 16619   0
This week, I had an honest to god gaming light bulb moment. I was messing around with Magic Realm’s digital version, Realmspeak, for the 3rd time in a couple years. And it finally clicked. I can now safely Magic Realm is the most creative game I’ve ever played and maybe the best. There is not a single idea in it that is not original. That is why the game is so hard to grasp---because Hamblen approached every single question of design in the game unencumbered by other people's ideas about fantasy and...
Battle Above the Clouds
Board Game Reviews GS Gary Sax Updated January 31, 2019 9415   0
I started playing a new wargame series late this winter. Well, actually, not a new series but a very old series. Great Campaigns of the American Civil War (GCACW) was first published by Avalon Hill and is now published by MMP. Battle Above the Clouds, covering the Chickamauga campaign, is the most recent release in the 8 game series. This is a series I overlooked for a long time because it seemed old fashioned in subject and gameplay. The short and sweet of it is that this is a series wargamers must play. ...

Went down to Atlanta this weekend.  I'll echo most of the stuff that everyone said in the dedicated thread.  Averyfest was a total riot.  Probably put this up as a blog post too.  I won't go down all the games I played because they're similar to everyone else's in the thread.  Steve "Droid Factory" Avery is awesome, Richard Launius is a complete gentleman and Dan Baden is a bastard.  Atlanta gaming is pretty awesome, you have plenty of Euro weenies but your selection of other characters is great.  Wish I had something close to it in my city.  My...

Game Information

I just played an excellent solo scenario of Strike Them a Blow! in Grant Takes Command. I bought it a few weeks ago and have been playing it quite a bit, finally starting to have the ideas of Great Campaigns of the American Civil War (GCACW) mesh. The Union won a number of initiatives to begin. As a result, the game started off with Hancock getting an excellent start--this was a sign of things to come from him. As historically, he went wide around the Mattopony river, exhausting himself and his corps before ending up far...
Warhammer: Invasion Review

Game Information

Warhammer: Invasion is the latest living card game from Fantasy Flight Games.  After many years out of the CCG game, I decided to come back to it.  The lure of Warhammer, great art, and a really fast playing 2 player game were too much to avoid.

So I played Clash of Monarchs, the complicated CDG, with a guy who lives in my town on BGG.  It was a good experience but reallly had me thinking a lot about the eternal issue that Clearclaw makes us think about.  He's really probably wrong in this respect: that he'd rather play a great game with bad company than a bad game in good company. In terms of the game itself and a brief AAR, it was pretty crazy, we got about 2 years out of the way.  In 1757 (our start) Fred pounded Charles but didn't...

Game Information

Well FA:TtiesI went to the trouble of writing this up for BGG, so I figured I'd post it in a blog here. You guys have probably already heard all about my love of COM since I wrote an early impressions thing, but it's a year later, I'm still playing the hell out of it and loving it so... A Long Sloppy Love Letter to Clash of Monarchs This is a review that has been simmering for a long time. I’ve finished about 4 campaigns of this game and it has...

I JUST CODED INFORMATION ON FRENCH POLITICIANS ALL FUCKING DAY AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH      ...on the other hand, if you do find yourself in the Est circumscription of France on Saturday, please, please do us all a favor and vote PCF to get this comically ridiculous Frenchman into the EP.  He needs YOUR vote since he's way down on the list in 8th position.

That's right motherfucker!  General Rumantseyev is spending the fucking winter all up in your business!  IN FUCKING BERLIN IN YOUR GOD DAMN HOUSE, DRINKING YOUR FUCKING WINE, FREDERICK YOU FUCKING PRICK!   Actually he's a really nice guy e-mail opponent and I'd feel bad taunting him.  So I do it here.  And I've been getting my ass kicked all game so this is just some temporary triumph.
Member Blogs GS Gary Sax Updated January 28, 2015 4058   0 Just a quick link and run.  This is one of my two preorders and I'm very excited for it.  Good to see the game is playing nice and short.  I already have a solitaire game that plays long (FoF) and the whole Zombie theme fits a short beer and pretzels game.  Looking like exactly what I was hoping for when I ordered it, a nice wargame/zombie hybrid.  It's coming out from Lock N' Load, hopefully soonish, summer maybe?
