The 2008 Trashie Awards- Special Announcement!

Hot
MB Updated
There Will Be Games
goldentrash.jpg Here we are at the end of 2007 and that can only mean one thing here at F:AT- it's time for the Trashies!

Now, in previous years I was the judge, jury, and executioner for all things Trashie. I defined the award categories, nominated folks, and selected winners. But in 2007, I stopped visiting a lot of the other websites that were hotbeds for Trashie-worthy behavior so I'm not exactly qualified to don the mighty mantle of Sole Arbiter for the awards this year. So, in the spirit of democratic change, I am opening the 2008 Trashies to be YOUR awards! This is kind of how the People's Choice Awards should be, except that this actually means something- everything.

This will truly be the ultimate in board gaming awards- no "back room" selection process like you see with the IGA, no Tom Vasel-like payola schemes, and it's entirely possible for you, the gaming public, to nominate a game or gaming personalty simply because you think it/they sucks.

Here's the deal. Don't post your stuff here. We're going to have a full award show sometime around christmas. I want you, the F:AT loyal, to send me a PM with your nominees- I want to know why you're putting the game, company, person, website, or whatever up for an award. I do have a number of recommended categories that I want to see your nominees for, but feel free to start your own category.

Now, I'm still in control of this thing...so only the best will make the cut. So make 'em good.

Here we go- the categories:

THE 2008 TRASHIE GAME OF THE YEAR

"THE CLEARCLAW" LIFETIME ACHIEVMENT AWARD IN THE AREA OF FUN MURDERING

THE ROBERT MARTIN MEMORIAL AWARD FOR F:ATTIE OF THE YEAR

THE BIG BOARD GAME STINK '08

THE 2008 PT BARNUM SUCKER PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN BOARD GAME MARKETING

THE JEFF WIDDERICH COMMEMORATIVE PRIZE FOR SUPERLATIVE SHILLING

BIGGEST JUMPED-UP PIECE OF SHIT I PLAYED ALL YEAR

MOST SOFTBALL BOARD GAME REVIEW BY A REVIEWER REGARDED AS AN AUTHORITY ON THE SUBJECT

THE JIMMY CARTER COMMEMORATIVE PEANUT CUP FOR PAN-EURO/AMERITRASH FRIENDSHIP OUTREACH AND UNDERSTANDING

BOARD GAMING EVENT OF THE YEAR THAT YOU DID NOT ATTEND

"THE IT'S ALL GOOD" AWARD FOR MOST MIDDLE OF THE ROAD OPINION

MOST USELESS BOARD GAMING PRODUCT OF 2008

THE GAME THAT STUNK

THE XEROX CUP FOR THE LEAST ORIGINAL GAME OF 2008

THE GOLDEN CRAYON AWARD FOR WORST BOARD GAME ART

BOARDGAMENEWS.COM ARTICLE OF THE YEAR

THE PLATINUM PHALLUS AWARD FOR MOST SUBLIMINAL SEXUAL MESSAGING IN A BOARD GAME

THE RALPH NADER "UNCHEAP AT ANY PRICE" AWARD FOR MOST VIGILANT CONSUMER WATCHDOGISM

I may think of some more...but get cracking, and get that tuxedo pressed.

Senior Board Game Reviews Editor

Sometime in the early 1980s, MichaelBarnes’ parents thought it would be a good idea to buy him a board game to keep him busy with some friends during one of those high-pressure, “free” timeshare vacations. It turned out to be a terrible idea, because the game was TSR’s Dungeon! - and the rest, as they say, is history. Michael has been involved with writing professionally about games since 2002, when he busked for store credit writing for Boulder Games’ newsletter. He has written for a number of international hobby gaming periodicals and popular Web sites. From 2004-2008, he was the co-owner of Atlanta Game Factory, a brick-and-mortar retail store. He is currently the co-founder of FortressAT.com and Nohighscores.com as well as the Editor-in-Chief of Miniature Market’s Review Corner feature. He is married with two childen and when he’s not playing some kind of game he enjoys stockpiling trivial information about music, comics and film.
