Paddington 2 - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

Only the 1st 2018 movie I've seen and already it's better than 83% of movies I saw in 2017. Stellar start to a new year of movies. Took 6-year old Emily to see this and we both totally loved it. I couldn't believe how much I was laughing out loud. All the time. I know nothing of Paddington, not having seen the first one (which I hear is good), nor having read the books. Same with Emily. You don't need to have previous exposure to love this movie. It's a total joy and...

Great flick on a 17-year old boy falling in summer love for the first time somewhere in Northern Italy in the early 80s. Great lead performance as well as the supporting cast. Chalamet has been in two of my favourite movies of this year. Can't wait to see him in more things down the road. The scene between son and father on the couch is worth the price of admission alone. I'd never believe that the actor who plays the comic relief in Men in Black III would be able to pull off a scene like...

Had no idea what this was about, and went alone. I had heard that Kevin Spacey got replaced by Christopher Plummer and that's all I knew. Overall it's a good tense ransom movie but it is very far from great. I don't think Mark Whalberg has the chops for this type of role, but it's not an especially interesting character to play in his defence. Christopher Plummer (who i admire) plays almost the exact same character from Inside Man, so that's annoying. I mostly just enjoyed the scenes in Italy of the kidnappee...

Great companion piece to Dunkirk. One of which is the war movie of getting 300k troops off a beach, the other is a war drama about the politics behind getting those dudes home (and dealing with everything else in the early war). I don't remember Gary Oldman ever being the leading role in anything off-hand. Even Dracula was a supportive role. After seeing this film, you'll wonder why Oldman hasn't been given more room to shine in the past. He is utterly transformed as Winston Churchill. You will not see a speck of Oldman in...
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

Well that was pretty damn good. I went with three much older people, two in their golden years. All of whom have very little exposure to Star Wars and one of which practically none. They all loved it. I really wanted to know what watching a movie like this would be like if you don't come at it with the nostalgic baggage that some of us have been carrying around since 1977. That nostalgic baggage is what kept me from enjoying anything about the prequels other than Darth Maul having a...

I've had to sleep on this a couple of nights before figuring out how to write or talk about this movie. Is it this year's Manchester By the Sea? ...maybe. There's so much subject matter to dodge talking about since I would never want to colour anyone's viewing of this movie. i went in completely dark. It's basically the story of what life is like for a kid growing up, living in discount inn(s) close to Disney World, where her mom can barely afford to live full-time. So it's a mix of what...
Coco - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

Pixar pulls off another paradox in delivering a hilarious tear-jerker. Took 6-yr old Emily to this and she loved it, as did I. It's visually stunning and the music is great. Really tough subject matter to tackle and they did so in a beautiful way for kids to interpret and understand. There was this massive short film on Frozen beforehand that seemed to go on forever and felt a little rushed and easy when it came to forcing songs. This led me to better appreciate the use of music in Coco....
Blade Runner 2049 - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

How has this movie not even made $90 million yet? Is it the length? I am so happy I didn't miss the chance to see this in theatres. I think my biggest takeaway is how surprisingly affecting it was. I couldn't get enough of the scenes between K (Gosling) and Joi (great supporting performance by Ana de Armas). The 2nd scene in the movie felt like almost 20 minutes of just setting this up, and at the time i found it surprising to spend this much screentime on developing this sub-plot, but it sure paid...
Lady Bird - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

Wow. Where did this come from? I honestly walked into this thinking this was an early biopic of Lady Bird Johnson. Last year around this time, i cluelessly walked into Moonlight expecting something completely different as well. I think this must be the very best way to walk into a movie because this is twice that i've been totally blown away. It's similar in some ways to last year's Edge of Seventeen except instead of just supplying the ups, this one also gets into the downs really effectively. In fact, depression is explored on many...
The Star - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

More family-appropriate than Passion of the Christ. I really wanted to take 6-year old Emily to see Wonder but she saw a preview of The Star and really wanted to see this instead. A lot of my childhood had a large amount of catholic indoctrination media (mostly audio cassettes) so I was weary to expose her to anything that could be dripping with the Jesus juice. This movie was not that, it was a really fun and a nice adventure of basically all the animals that end up in the manger where someone of great significance...
