I think I have better advice for starting out in Fields of Fire and where to start. Anybody who is curious and willing to take the plunge please read! And please buy it; it is a great, great game if you are into solo games at all and you surmount the learning curve.
I was playing through a patrol type of scenario. I think I would recommend starting out with a patrol (like mission 3 in the WWII book). Try playing it without the darkness on the map, playing during the day and don't let the other platoons you set up fire at anybody or anything. I think this would be an ideal learning situation. Handling a platoon is hard enough, much less trying to juggle an entire company at the beginning. Also each patrol is a little tiny little, short encapsulated experience.
Maybe I'll take pictures of one of my patrols each turn and write up a session report. Would anybody like to see that?
Finally, I got some people saying they thought about getting the game but were afraid of the rules... Please ask me any questions you have about the rules either in the comments to this blog, via PM or in the trash talk folder Fields of Fire thread. I'd be glad to help with some plain english answers.
