Next of Ken, Special Edition: F:AT Reader's Choice for Game of the Year 2012 Discussion

Going to keep this week's column short and sweet, because I'm assuming most of you are still hung over from New Year's parties.  I do want feedback from everyone that reads this site and is interested in our F:AT Reader's Choice Awards...so join us, won't you?

Okay folks, so I'd promised we'd have this discussion when the time came, and, well, the time has come.  I'm doing this front page style because quite frankly we have a lot of people who speak up during the end of year voting that don't necessarily post often or even frequent the forums all that much.  Since this is one of my favorite things we do on F:AT, and I like to hear from even our most casual of readers, I'm putting the discussion front page and center and really want some feedback here in regards to our F:AT Reader's Choice Awards for 2012, so listen up.

First up, it's well known that last year, our readers voted a game as 2011 Game of the Year that actually was published in the very tail end of 2010.  Also, we run into the problem every year of doing our votes in January, which leaves off a lot of games from December that people haven't had a chance to really dig into yet or are not widely available (which lead to the problem stated above.)

So here's what I'd like to ask you:

1.  Do you think that we should wait until March to do our voting?  With the New Year comes the desire for "Best of" year-end lists, and these sorts of things are less exciting three months in.  However, we want all the games to have a chance to shine and avoid the problem of stuff getting lost in that end-of-year shuffle.

It may not be as bad this year as I don't recall a lot of big name titles releasing this December, except for Star Wars LCG from Fantasy Flight Games which literally hit stores two days before Christmas.  This one as of today is still widely available, so it's just a matter of people having time to play it.

So that's the question:  Now, or later?  I can easily put this thing together this very month, or we can do it in March.  Majority rules, it's your poll, it's your call.

2.  Something that a reader mentioned to me was that what also lead to a lot of votes for Merchants & Marauders was the public voting.  Once the votes started flowing for it, it encouraged more votes.  Now not to say that it wasn't deserving, but that does lead to the next question.

I thought this year we might 'privatize' the nomination round, followed by voting for the top nominations in each category.  What I thought about doing is having nominations opened and during that time, I'd accept nominations for the various categories by email (that I'll set up and provide.)  I'll eliminate any invalid nominaions and take the top 5 in each category.  From there, we'll do private voting, and reveal the results in the big-time front page splash I always like to do for these.  Does this sound okay to everyone else?

My rationale is that people feel like they waste their 'official' vote by nominating something that doesn't make the cut.  That may lead to someone tossing in a vote for an established vote-getter rather than what they would have really chosen.

Here, they get the best of both worlds.  They can nominate whatever game they want (and it won't be swayed by the votes of others), then when the top 5 are listed, they can be sure that their official vote makes a difference in the final tally.  Sounds like a win-win to me!

And, well, that's it, really.  Do it now or wait 'til later, and using nominations rather than open 'anything goes' voting.  What say the lot of you?

Sorry for the brevity this week, I wanted to make sure this discussion didn't get lost in the shuffle.  Also, the results of your feedback will help me plan out my columns for the next few weeks.  I'll be back with a column next week where I'll go over both games played and movies watched over the holiday break.  'Til then, I'll see ya in seven.
