Brought 7-year old Emily to this and it was a hit. I must admit I slept through at least the first half of the movie. I think trying to introduce a bunch of clay characters is tough since they are fairly indistinguishable and the voice actors aren't strong enough to make them unique. This style of animation works well for Shaun the Sheep since all the characters are pretty much the same except for Shaun, the farmer and the dog. You don't need to know the different sheep at all. So in this one, everyone looks and sounds the...

I think one of you guys has my Summoner Wars Master Set. It’s not on the shelf. Do me a favor, play it, or return it. I don't much care which. I used to have a game collection. Now I have games. I used to keep track of what I owned and be able to speak to it with confidence. Now I have a pretty good idea of what’s in the basement, but if someone asks I always make it a point to check I...

Follow @mattthr The kitchen is bright and white. On the breakfast bar is a colossal faux-lego rollercoaster, a testament to a late-night drunken Kickstarter visit. Glancing down to the nearby dining table, I see a scattered mess of cards, dice and Star Wars art. My face falls. "Oh no," I say. "You didn't". "It's an experiment," my host replies. "Was just curious about the system. I'm not going to buy any boosters."

Follow @mattthr Late at night we tumble in from the pub, blood up with beer, hungry for destruction and junk food. Cheeks pink with cold, someone lights a fire and we hurl wood and paper into its bright maw, watching it curl and turn to ash. It's not enough destruction. We want to destroy nations beneath our booted heels. Mare Nostrum gets pulled out from the tottering stack of tattered boxes in the corner. There is the sweet, viscous whisper of some sweet liqueur into glasses, promising a sweeter future. In...

This should be a fun review to write. First of all, let me get it off my chest that the movie should have just been called Three Billboards. I don't know why they went with this title. I loved this movie and was constantly moved while watching it, trying to figure out exactly what it was. Enjoying the ride the entire way, mind you. I think in many ways this movie is this year's Manchester by the Sea but doesn't hit the same level of perfection (but it's close). ...

Only the 1st 2018 movie I've seen and already it's better than 83% of movies I saw in 2017. Stellar start to a new year of movies. Took 6-year old Emily to see this and we both totally loved it. I couldn't believe how much I was laughing out loud. All the time. I know nothing of Paddington, not having seen the first one (which I hear is good), nor having read the books. Same with Emily. You don't need to have previous exposure to love this movie. It's a total joy and...

Follow @mattthr It is December, 1984. The sky is a gray slate, the air damp and cold. But I am aglow with excitement. As an 11 year old, newly-minted gamer I am about to visit my first proper game shop. It's a little way out of the Norwich city center streets I know, so my Dad guides me, eyes rolling with loving exasperation. At school, a friend has told me what to expect. There will be racks of games and miniatures in "blister packs". I ask my friend what...

Great flick on a 17-year old boy falling in summer love for the first time somewhere in Northern Italy in the early 80s. Great lead performance as well as the supporting cast. Chalamet has been in two of my favourite movies of this year. Can't wait to see him in more things down the road. The scene between son and father on the couch is worth the price of admission alone. I'd never believe that the actor who plays the comic relief in Men in Black III would be able to pull off a scene like...

Had no idea what this was about, and went alone. I had heard that Kevin Spacey got replaced by Christopher Plummer and that's all I knew. Overall it's a good tense ransom movie but it is very far from great. I don't think Mark Whalberg has the chops for this type of role, but it's not an especially interesting character to play in his defence. Christopher Plummer (who i admire) plays almost the exact same character from Inside Man, so that's annoying. I mostly just enjoyed the scenes in Italy of the kidnappee...

Great companion piece to Dunkirk. One of which is the war movie of getting 300k troops off a beach, the other is a war drama about the politics behind getting those dudes home (and dealing with everything else in the early war). I don't remember Gary Oldman ever being the leading role in anything off-hand. Even Dracula was a supportive role. After seeing this film, you'll wonder why Oldman hasn't been given more room to shine in the past. He is utterly transformed as Winston Churchill. You will not see a speck of Oldman in...
