Merchant of Venus is considered by many to be Richard Hamblen's masterpeice. It was originally designed on commission for Mccormick Spices as a spice trading game. Mccormick rejected the design as too complex. So Avalon Hill rethemed the game and published it in 1988 as Merchant of Venus; setting it in an unexplored part of the galaxy during a reawakening of galactic civilization with players moving around the board as traders discovering long-forgotten pockets of civilization and buying and selling goods. After it went out of print, it became a holy grail game for many...

"I want to blow some shit up!" was the statement made by Uba in a post put up on The Fort earlier this week.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the events of a year ago, when both Stronghold Games and Fantasy Flight announced a reprint of Richard Hamblen’s Merchant of Venus. Confused fans had every reason to be pessimistic. The ensuing silence only fed fears that the lawyers had been sent in to do battle. We may never know all of the details of how the whole thing happened or how it was resolved. But what I do know is that the resulting reprint of Merchant of Venus succeeds beyond anything my heart dared to hope for. ...

In this glorious age of reprints, there are very few remaining classic titles from the eighties that haven’t seen a rebirth in some form or other. Of those left stranded in the past most of any consequence were by designer Richard Hamblen. Known for his intricate and fiendishly detailed designs, one game in his oeuvre was relatively simple and short and cherished fondly for those exact reasons. And now Fantasy Flight Games has brought it to join the ranks of the resurrected.

As many of our customers already know, back in October while we were in Essen, we announced a reprint of Merchant of Venus, a Richard Hamblen designed game, after 18 months of discussions directly with Mr. Hamblen. To our surprise, a day later Fantasy Flight Games also announced a reprint of Merchant of Venus. Of course, under normal conditions, with licensing contracts granting exclusivity, this should not have been possible. Fantasy Flight Games had obtained their license of the game from a different party, and of course neither FFG nor Stronghold Games was aware of each other's...

Stronghold Games has announced that they will be reprinting Richard Hamblen's Merchant of Venus. They expect to release it in 2012, possibly as early as the 2nd quarter. As Stronghold Games has done with other reprints of classic games, Merchant of Venus will include a straight reprint of the original game with enhanced, high quality components, and also include some optional new ways to play. The new additions may come from the many fan variants that have been posted and published over the years.

I posted about the combat rules and some possible variants for Merchant of Venus and got absolutelly no response. And I was surprised as this is after all an Ameritrash site, so it doesn't seem so crazy to think people here would be interested in making this game a bit more confrontational... I mean, I can understand some people liking the streamlined nature of MoV (notice how it's classified as "strategy" on BGG instead of "Thematic") but I don't know... I do love the game as it is, but why not spice it up a little?
