Capture the flag with wizards and spells. Wiz-War was first published in 1985 by Jolly Games. The first edition of the game had photocopied chits and rules and the board tiles were silk screened by hand by Tom Jolly. Game materials were inproved over the next serveral editions. It went out of print after it's 7th edition which was published in 1997. Fantasy Flight Games published the 8th edition in 2012. It is considered a "beer & pretzels" game. Do you agree? What do you think of Wiz-Wars? Do you have a...

Welcome back. This is part two of my "Ode to FFG". In this week's episode we will be looking exclusively at games that the company brought back from the dead. For a bunch of nerdy guys in Minnesota, their Necromancy skills are quite high. Yes, FFG really started making a name for themselves by bringing many beloved games back to the market. Some were really terrific. They were games that made you weep a little because you never thought you'd get your hands on them. Others were a little less well received....

Sometimes reviewers have to write up what they know, and call it a day. There’s a kind of nebulous pressure to get a review out quickly, and usually that’s fine. If you play a game 3-4 times, you almost certainly know how you feel. There are times when it doesn’t even take that long. But now and then a game begins to grow legs after you pass judgement, and becomes this odd game that you gave an alright review to, but that you now love.

Yesterday I cracked open my new copy of Wiz-War for the first time. I have the eighth edition Fantasy Flight version of this classic game of lightning fast magic duels, and was not astonished to be immediately stunned by all of the eye candy. Great plastic miniatures, tons of tokens with colorful graphics, a beautiful board, its all there, per usual with Fantasy Flight reissues. But to my surprise, as soon as I had read the rules and got a game underway, I forgot all about the art.

No doubt many of my readers have read and enjoyed the Harry Potter books. Remember the final sequence of the fourth book? Harry is one of four champions in the poorly-named Tri-Wizard Tournament, and the final ordeal is to plunge into a magical labyrinth. In the labyrinth, nothing is as it seems. The walls shift, the atmosphere plays tricks on him, and his sense of direction abandons him at inopportune times. Not only that, but the other competitors keep running into each other, slinging spells and hexes at each other in an effort to grab the Tri-Wizard Cup....

If there is genuinely a board game version of development hell, as distinct from the normal travails designers have to go through trying to get a publisher to notice their games, then Wiz-War deserves the award for the longest time spent therein. Originally published in 1985 and much beloved of the early Dungeons & Dragons crowd it went through seven editions before ending up, rather oddly, with dice manufacturer Chessex who promptly sat on the license for 15 years before handing it over to Fantasy Flight Games to release an 8th edition of the game. Shockingly, as someone who...

Wizards wage no-spells-barred magical duels deep in an underground labyrinth in Wiz-War. This classic board game of magical mayhem for 2-4 players pits players’ wizards against each other in a stupendous struggle for magical mastery. Win by stealing other wizards’ treasures and hauling them back to your base, or just score points by blasting the other wizards. The last wizard standing always wins.
