I stop by the Robert E. Howard forums every once in awhile and came across this thread about the upcoming Age of Conan board game over there today:

www.conan.com/invboard/index.php?showtopic=3367

Along with mentioning the Fortress Ameritrash interview, there are:

-the new box art (page 2 of thread)

-pictures of 2 of the figure sculpts (on page 3 of the thread)

-pictures of the game being demoed at Gencon

Looks very cool.

Those look pretty cool (sort of a cross between the styles of the AoC mmo and the new comics, albeit they were somewhat similar to begin with), does anyone know what scale they are supposed to be? Old-school Axis and Allies 1:72 scale, or the larger and chunkier minis FFG has used in Starcraft and Warcraft?

i've put a few new pictures up on my profile space
fortressat.com/index.php/Community/menu-id-319

The mini's are about 1:72. Starcraft has mixed scales (compare Zergling and the cruiser).

The bits are actually quite good. The backs of the different card decks are great as well. The blood dripping from the battleaxe on the strategy cards and Conan looking into the sunset for the Conan cards have so much atmosphere

Either the board is too small or the pieces are too big. This looks like a clustered mess. I'm also not a fan of the four nations having all their territories colored in.

Disappointing. I had high hopes for this one.

I'm sorry for the low quality of the pictures. They were made on my cell phone and the lighting at Essen is not ideal.

The situation shown on the board was at the end of teh 2nd age. It got a bit crowded by then, but because of the stacking limit of 5 armies, it never became problematic. Could be when large armies moved closer together.

The 'countries' are coloured in with the home areas in a stronger colour than the unconquered areas. At the start of the game all areas, except the four home areas, start as neutrals and need to be conquered. In game terms the four coloured areas are named north, east, south and central and these areas determine where strategy cards have an effect on attempts to control an area by diplomacy. But there certainly is a psychological factor involved.

If they start as neutral countries then why are they shaded a lighter color? It looks pre-determined. North, South, East, and West also doesn't sound very thematic. Why not at least go by the regional names?

And why on Hyboria is this *not* an adventure game. The episodic nature of the stories make the theme a perfect fit. Not only that but one of the core concepts of Conan is the will of and cunning of the individual. Why did they then choose to go with a more collective game putting players in control of armies?

Simply putting Conan images on cards and boards don't make the game thematic.

I hope I'm wrong. I really liked Marvel Heroes, but I suppose if this doesn't pan out I can save a little cash.

I can't say why they would have given the areas teh same (but lighter colours) of the home areas. But the effect on the actual shape of the expanding Kingdoms is largely psychological. We had Hyperborians and Stygians in the central region.

The choice for a strategic, rather than an adventure game I can also not explain. But
if you look at the interview with the designers in June 2007, this was always on the cards.

Well, have a look at this review first, and wait for mine before making a final choice. If you just want this game to be an adventure game, then you'll never like it. If you liked Lord of the Rings and like to have a similar feel in a multiplayer game, this might be something for you. For me, in this form, it scores high.

and for a slightly less biased review and a good discussion of some points raised by Jack.
