For the love of god, don't even go there!

I wasted days - literally, days - trying to teach myself Magic Realm. I got there in the end and found that it really, really wasn't worth the journey.

Hark unto me and save yourself the bother - it's not a bad game, but it is in no way worth the effort required to learn it.

I did see your posts on BGG, and I put a lot of weight on what you said. But aren't you also the one who hates play-against-the-rules games like Talisman? Maybe that's Malloc, I can't recall.

Yeah, I thought about that first, but I didn't think that the better half would think too much of it happenning in the basement, which meant that I'd have to spring for a room and, well, fuck that, so I switched to my personal vice of choice --food.

I played MR once, live, with a great tutor and a bunch of newbs and it was fucking awesome, so I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about.

Lazy bitches. Off with you! And find someone to teach me this damn game!

Woah, I don't own Magic Realm, but all this talk here urges me to buy a copy and learn the game. Sounds like a challenge.

Understanding complex rule books is similar to translating Latin. I sucked at that, but often enough my interpretations were more exciting than the original.

Bah! Rules...you roll some dice, move some people, stuff happens. Its a piece of cake.

That is my patented rules description for all my games...

My previous feeling was that most complex games aren't that hard to learn - they just take longer. But Magic Realm is like learning how to drive a car for the first time in downtown Newark. It feels almost hopeless.

I know the rules pretty well, though the last time I played it was at GenCon 2007. If for some reason someone actually finds themselves in Olathe, KS I can help teach them the game. :P

I should download RealmSpeak again, maybe we could get some games going with some forum-members here.

Hey Ocho, did you play with Joel Yoder?

Yeah, it was with Joel and wtrollkin2000 (don't remember his name, arg). I watched Joel teach some people in another game, but didn't play in it - I even still have the card that Toledo's Santa Tom gave me. :silly:

BTW, if you see Joel IRL be sure to ask him to sign your printed copy of the Magic Realm in Plain English rules. ;)

I think I remember you now Ocho. I was part of Joel's little tutorial with Santa Tom.

And SG... does that mean I could cover you in mayonaise, have you whistling Dixie, whilst I throw bologna at you?

And put it on You Tube?

I'm not sure what you mean by play-against-the-rules games but I'm not overly fond of Talisman. The reason is very simple - the game is too long to sustain the amount of interest that it offers. If it were a 60 minute affair, I'd love it, but it often runs three maybe four times that.

Magic Realm is a much better game than Talisman. There are elements to the design which are really clever. But learning the rules is such an uphill struggle that it'd have to be the absolute god-emperor of all games to make it worthwhile.

It isn't. Don't do it.

Fortunately, I live in the Commonwealth, not State, of Virginia, so start dialing the escort services while I bust out RealmSpeak and get my tutorial cards ready. :silly:

Damn it, that bit of not-so-cleverness is going to cost me. Very well, but you're geting a downtown Richmond, Broad Street hooker, so I still win in the end.

Now that's just cruel. This is like getting one of those updated Terms of Service notices from a credit card company printed in unreadable agatetype.
