I played 5 games of Cosmic Encounter yesturday.
I almost feel like a eurogamer.

Be sure to carefully log them over at The Leading Boardgames Site, Skelly ...

... whenever they decide to get the site back online, that is. ;)

+++++

On a more serious note, I hope you enjoyed them ... I'm guessing that you wouldn't willingly sit through five of anything if it wasn't at least moderately fun, so I'm taking that as a good sign.

If you were a eurogamer you'd have played it twice then moved on to the next game.

This gives me an idea for a photoshop. Surly aliens, facial hair...hmmmmm..."Euro Encounter"? "Warpconia"?

i keep noticing the jibes at beards / facial hair on F:AT lately, i feel this is unjust. i was sporting a quite magnificent beard myself until this morning (it had got out of hand after several months). ok, so most of the beard crew at BGG don't really have what i would consider to be a a real beard. it's just a 3mm patchy growth that barely registers, or is there to keep the neck warm, but we need to segregate this. a true beard is a thing of joy, something to be treasured and displayed, to prove that you are man's man, and could wrestle a bear to death, or at least make it choke on your beard whilst it munches on your lifeless head.

Hehe. I like my beard, and it's all kinds of hilarious (for everyone else) when my baby yanks on it with all his might...I was just referencing the angry moustached guys on Euro box covers.

I don't get the anti-beard sentiments lately either. Of all the things we could be mocking the stereotypical Euro-gamer for, facial hair seems like a weak choice.

I'm always clean-shaven, just for the record. :)

Five games of Cosmic Encounter? Wow.

Yesterday, I played my first game of CE since 1984, and after three hours, we mutually agreed to lower the victory condition from five colonies to four, which allowed us to finish within another half hour. It was a five-player game, and though I was able to readily explain the basics, we checked the rulebook often at first to make sure that we were playing correctly. Our five races were: Warrior, Clone, Sorceror (me), Vacuum and Zombie. We got into a serious timing issue involving Vacuum and Zombie, the kind of argument that could have ruined an old-school game with the rules lawyers in my original gaming group, but the FFG edition has a very good overall rule addressing timing. We all actually enjoyed CE a lot, but two of our people wanted to get in a game of BSG before they had to leave at 7:00.

As for beards, I have never grown one, because once I get to about the five-day mark with the facial stubble, the itching becomes too distracting. Also, it seems like a facial hair would be a hassle with respect to eating, puking, eating pussy, and even the sniffles.

Shellhead, it'll probably play much faster as you and your group become more experienced. Although, the occasional three hour game can still happen now and then. I'm basing this on my experience with Mayfair - I haven't played FFG, but I was just informed by Amazon that they shipped it!

Back when I played Cosmic Online regularly, a half hour would be a long game. ;)

Our group quickly grasped the hazard of inviting attacking allies, so each of us only picked up a couple of easy colonies that way. Vacuum got ahold of the Vacuum flare, so he was using his power to selectively eradicate colonies, which kept everybody else from making any serious progress towards victory. And the Moebius tubes bailed out three players who had lost most of the ships up to that point. One thing that probably would have accelerated the game eventually was that by the third hour, Clone, Sorceror and Zombie had all lost their powers. And more importantly, unfamiliarity with the rules easily added an hour to our game.
