Okay, someone convince me why I ought to buy this over my current GW version which has been played about once?

Get to work, fanboys :)

Because it's the best game ever (along with Dune). Seriously, I am no fanboy but CE was an instant hit in my group. Everybody loves it and they refuse to play anything else now. And we haven't even started with techs and orange aliens yet. The cards are very durable and there is no fixed board so it makes for an ideal pub-game.

I don't know why you didn't like it, but as I recall you said Compromises are useless, which implies to me that you didn't yet "get" the game. That's like playing Fury of Dracula once and declaring sea movement useless, or thinking that the odds of surviving Dungeonquest are next to nil (ok maybe that one's accurate).

You might have played advanced, or just plain odd, aliens in your one game, since the GW aliens presumably weren't categorized by level of difficulty. I could see that being a turn-off. If you tried the FFG edition with all using green (newbie) aliens, I think you'd have a good time.

Mine arrived last week and I should get it in my grubby paws tomorrow. I will report back on quality, etc. Maybe I'll do a session report.

Mine arrived Sat morning as well. Even though you don't get a board and just basic ships for the price, the quality of the card components makes it look fantastic.
Now to get people playing it.

Bought it in the end. Know what finally convinced me? An image on TOS comparing the artwork on the Zombie cards across the editions. The GW version looked so awful next to the FFG one that I went for it there and then!

I saw that image on TOS. The british zombie was a little bit limp wristed!

My copy arrived, but we had 6 players so we played BSG instead. Looking back, I should have just mocked up tokens for a sixth player out of another game, because it would probably handle it.

The components are great, the little ships look better in person and the alien cards are gorgeous. The cards are very thick and all the cardboard in the game looks nice. The best thing is they gave you tokens for some of the specials in the game. There are grudge tokens which only come into play if someone is using the grudge alien, etc.

The $60 price point still looks a little high, but not like the scam I believed it to be. Its hard to understand why this game is priced about $10 higher than BSG, when BSG has just as much stuff, better minis, and a board, but who cares? At the end of the day, you are paying for great development on the aliens, incredible art, rules tweaks, and one of the most replayable games ever. The UFOs aren't as sexy as TI:3 ships, but they stack and are easy to count.

My GW version supports six, but I don't see it as being such a big deal. After all, like you said, if you get more people then just play something different!

So, having upgraded, here's the million-dollar question. Anyone out there enough of a collector to want my GW edition in order to complete their range of different CE sets from different publishers?
