But it wasn't exactly dumped on the market, it still likely sold very well in comparison to small press hobby games. But still not Hasbro numbers.
At any rate, I knew we wouldn't make it a day before someone played the "why don't they just redo Heroscape" card and others would chime in with the "meh, I like Heroscape better" comments. Yet I'm looking at this video and what little information we have and I'm seeing a game that could be a smart _sellable_ evolution of Heroscape with a lot of potential. It doesn't look like just a "rebrand", and it looks like there is great effort being expended to make sure that the game brings forward some of the core values and concepts of Magic.
What are you guys going to be saying this time net year if this game turns out to be BETTER than Heroscape?

"With Captain America's tactical vision, the 10th Regiment of Foot takes its position atop the hill and peppers Braxas with lead hopefully doing enough damage to move her away from the glyph."

My 13yo son plays quite a bit of MtG and watched the video for this, saw the Plainswalker mini's, units, and cards and he really liked what he saw. He has a few friends at school who play MtG, none have ever heard of Heroscape.
I think this game will appeal to the right demographics, gamer adults kids who play MtGwith enough patience to learn the rules and play the game. I think Heroscape ended up under many kids bed as a play set rather than a boardgame. Sure it looked cool sitting on the shelf in a Toys R Us but it sold as a toy more than a boardgame.
The only people that bought into Heroscape expansions were the adult boardgamers who were willing to give an admittedly cheesy looking kids game on the shelf a play.

But that's not a guarantee...witness Hecatomb and Dreamblade...

The truth is, I actually expect this to be a better-designed game than Heroscape, or at least more adult-skewed-design. I love having cardplay, I like having a central planeswalker figure.Michael Barnes wrote: What are you guys going to be saying this time net year if this game turns out to be BETTER than Heroscape?
But as a TOY, as something to spark my kid's imagination? No WAY that it's better than Heroscape! Even ignoring the theme, it's clearly going to be much more cost-cutting, with less terrain possibilities, cardboard terrain features, unpainted squads, etc. As a spectacular production, Heroscape won't be beat.
Of course, this only matters to the folks with a bunch of Heroscape already. No way am I saying "they shouldn't have made this", "they should have just called it Heroscape" or anything...this is just my personal "probably won't buy it despite being a huge Magic fan" reaction.
I don't know who that dude was in the interview, but one of the designers they mentioned, Ethan Fleischer, is a (relatively newish) Magic designer.
