Siege of the Citadel to be reprinted

This just in from Essen. Modiphius (Achtung Cthulhu, Mutant Chronicles RPG, and The Thunderbirds among other things) are replublishing Siege of the Citadel. I absolutely adore the game even if it's hellishly unbalanced and really have to be played as a campaign. But the really cool thing is that they have Kevin Wilson, Eric Lang, and Richard Borg (who also worked on the original) to design the new edition.

Someone locally is selling some gently used copies of Siege of the Citadel for $50. What would you do? (Meaning, "what do you think I should do?")

a) buy the used copy for $50.
b) wait for the new edition and pay... let's say $75-$100.
c) buy neither because it's over-rated and/or dated.

I know very little about the game except that it's been on the fringe of my awareness for many years as something I might enjoy, being a HeroQuest fan as a kid.

Heh. It's another example of reprint irony. After years- over a decade- of this game being an "expensive" out of print concern, the reprint is likely going to retail for double or even triple its value.

I dunno, the last time I got into it, I was not as impressed as I was back in the 90s. I actually thought it was kind of lame. Thinking about where the game stands now, there are so many other games descended from it or like it on the market that the cache it once had has evaporated. I mean, you can throw a stone at Kickstarter and hit five games like it on the ricochet. I guess if you're really into the setting (Rilyen, represent) then it has that as a differentiator...but otherwise, I can't see pursuing it over some of the more recent, better games out there right now.

Space Crusade, now that's a different story. That game is still awesome and it remains one of the best mass market-style dungeoncrawlers. I prefer it to Heroquest.

Option B. As fun as the original was, it was horribly unbalanced at higher levels - often degenerating into a race among the corporation players to kill the highest point value monsters - and tactically it was too simple unless you added rules from the PnP-only expansion. In addition, some of the missions were borderline - if not outright - broken and others weren't that interesting. It also should probably be played with 4 or 5 boisterous ameritrash cutthroats to get the full effect.

That being said, the fact this game has a rotating OL player is brilliant and puts it in a class by itself in the one-versus-many genre, and the theme of mistrustful cooperation (a key aspect of the Mutant Chronicles fluff, FWIW) is also very well-implented and reinforced by the game's mechanics. IMO it's definitely still worth playing but I think $50 is a little too much.

I like the game, but I don't like it $100 deep.

I'm with Mike....Space Crusade is one of the few games I'd dump 100$+ into.

With that team of designers, I assume that the new edition will be more than a mere reprint. Though the linked article makes it sound like the only new content will be new missions, I am willing to bet that the combat will become more tactically interesting.

Definitely interested in looking at the final. I got to grill Richard about this over dinner once. Pressman basically handed him the minis, board, and card counts and said: We need a game, you have (some short amount of time.)

There wasn't a lot of time for playtesting, and the component counts were locked. What he managed was a miracle, but could definitely be better.

Space Crusade is definitely better than Heroquest, but I'm not sure I would place it over Citadel. There are a couple of standout missions like the Dreadnought Factory in the expansion. SC is DEFINITELY outdated (The story missions in Imperial Assault blow it out of the water), while we can still hold up the co-petitive missions and campaign systems from Siege of the Citadel.

Barnes have you ever written a review for Space Crusade? I've always been curious about it, but never had the chance to play it. I've always wanted a dungeon crawl in space.

I think I did a long time ago on Gameshark, but that stuff is lost now. Of the SF dungeoncrawls, it's my favorite next to Space Hulk. It's really old timey like Frank said...very Milton Bradley. But it's just fun to play. Very direct.
