One man armies.
One model.
Amazing how low GW has placed the barrier for entry into their games now.
Incredible.
Well, you have a large entry fee for the plastic assassins (especially since they were never released outside of that boxed game) unless you own the old metal models.
But they need to release some more stuff like that before I'll grant them too many accolades. So far it's just imperium. And the harlequin solitaire if you count that.
i wanna see some special characters or whatever from other races at least. But that might not be too thematic as it would be for sly Marbo and the assassins.
It's a good start.

(not that they haven't started months ago with all their other fantastic releases...)
They're giving you free rules here with which you can:
* proxy any minis you do happen to have and use these rules
* use the rules as a guide to homecook other one man army characters
The fact that the official one man army character choice is limited right now, and may or may not include a model we happen to own, doesn't mean this isn't an incredible move for fans. Free rules for low model count games...unheard of by GW not to long ago...

The assassin models are all really great. I enjoyed painting them quite a bit, it was early on after I picked up the brush again but they were kind of the first results where I was actually not embarassed.
My Cadians are coming on nicely. All 7 riflemen complete. I wasn't going to do their teeny little eyes, but the figures have so much character I felt that Rico, McQueen, Doyle, Jarvis, Stein, Harker, and Nero deserved it.
I used this tutorial-

I think it is one of the best I've seen/ it's SUPER straightforward and it just uses a few base colors and highlights. It doesn't have any of the "highlighting the highlights" stuff like Duncan does, no mixing paint 40-15-10-.75 percent. Base, wash, bring the color back, hit a couple of edges...and it's a good result.

Tyranids started hidden across the board, I dug in with the Cadians and positioned the Sarge so I could maximize his ability. I was running a gunline of four veterans and three guardsmen, one Plasma gun guy up in the Manufactorum. Tyranids were coming in with an Alpha with the Lash Whip and Bone Sword, a Gunbeast with Death Spitter, and a Gunbeast with Venom Cannon.
He actually made some smart moves on the approach, at least after I got onto him for wanting to put one of the Tyranids on top of a container...because that's how 7 year olds think. Between the running and fleeting target penalties, my overwatched dudes were thankful for bringing red dot sights. But I should have had Hot Shot laspacks going up against Tyranids because the standard lasrifle doesn't really hit hard enough. I was hitting but not wounding (5+). First shot, he just completely blasts one of my veterans with that acid cannon- downed him but not out.
The Alpha just barreled into four of them hunkered down, eating the downed guy outright. The other team members ran away and sort of set up a perimeter around the Alpha. It moved into H2H with another guardsmen, and then I made a terrible decision to shoot into that melee. With a full plasma shot. Hit my man instead of the Tyranid, there was no hope of a save, and the injury roll was a six- completely vaporized that guy!
The Deathspitter Gunbeast made a terrible decision and tried to run toward the manufactorum. Plasma dude fired at maximum power and got a six, meaning that it could blow up. It didn't. So that wounded him, and then a Veteran hit it to so it came in with only one wound, which the Plasma dude kindly provided. The venom cannon just kept blazing with its sustained fire, 4-5 shots at a time. The Sergeant fell to that.
It came down to the sixth turn- I still had the Alpha surrounded and at that point it had two wounds. I had to make a do-or-die roll with three guardsmen firing on the Alpha. Rolls were 1, 1, and 2. Plasma fortunately managed to get another wound on it and down it. We decided to call it a draw at that point.
As a side note, I had to make an ammo check on the Plasma rifle almost every time I fired it. Fortunately, it never ran out of ammo and it never exploded- it's Unreliable!
Cadians are really fun to play- simple and shooty. You really want the red dots on them to give their volume of fire a little boost, and I think the Hot Shots are probably well worth it if you are up against multi-wound, high toughness elites. The Sergeant's ability is really nice, but it does tend to keep your men close together- which can be bad if you are dealing with template weapons...or if guys go down and they break. One of the nice things is that it makes running a no-equipment leader viable, and you can pass that savings on to another body or more equipment. I think you really want the Plasma over the other other specialist choices because it is the only weapon they have with sustained fire and an almost dead-cert wound on a hit. I think there is almost no reason you would want to kit your Cadians with hand to hand weapons if they are versus anything with a WS of more than 3.
Tyranids continue to be brutal killing machines.

I got my Cadians from Doc...took a while but he came through and they were way cheaper than anywhere else.
BTW- If you just want to run Cadians with lasguns, you could easily buy two boxes of the push-fit Cadians for 10 minis- paint a stripe on one of their shoulders and call him sarge. Outlay? $19 at Miniature Market. Maybe even less on EBay.

The effort might be commensurate to buying another box of warriors, but it offers some cool factor too that you can't buy.
