Oh, about the Tyranids. I thought about trying the magnet thing but there are two big reasons I didn't:

1- One of the Tyranid special operatives is a Tyranid Prime, which you can make with the Tyranid Warrior kit. And if you want to run a three 'nid squad with a Prime...you need another box.
2- Dealing with the magnet thing was not worth just buying another $35 box.

With one box though, you can totally do a 1000 point team- and if you are mostly playing one offs or solo...that may be all you want with them anyway. You can do an Alpha with a pair of Bone Swords or a Lash Whip and Bone Sword, a Gunbeast with Deathspitter, and a Gunbeast with Venom Cannon or another Deathspitter. Also a pair of Scything Talons on each by default. Then the extra points can be spent on Adrenal Sacs, Toxin Sacs, Extended Chitin, Flesh Hooks and all of that stuff.

With two boxes, I did that lineup then I also did a Prime with a pair of bone swords (two parries, good god), a Gunbeast with Barbed Strangler (to give them a template weapon) and another Deathspitter guy. I didn't do the Spinefists or Ravager Claws on any of them- I may get a Ravener and put those on it.

Thinking about getting the Eldar team now...

Damn, dude, you paint fast.

How long can you sustain this rate...if you're human it seems a flameout is inevitable. Best case, i suppose, you're gonna run out of stuff to paint then lose interest.

When you're done...can I have the sylvaneth?

Early on, I experimented with magnets. I think I could do it way better now, but it doesn't appeal to me at all, to be honest.
Besides the additional workload of dealing with fiddly little magnets, it is also harder to paint. You probably want to paint the additional joints separately, which again is fiddly and doesn't mix up that well with the rest of the model.
And then, it is easy to lose limbs and stuff, because magnets aren't glue.
And two-hand weapons never looked completely properly attached (but that might be the lack of experience)

On the plus side, it does sort of give the model the feel of an action figure.

As long as you aren't playing WYSIWYG, another option is to just go for the option that is easiest to play counts-as with. For example, you can easily count a Venom Cannon as a Barbed Strangler or vice-versa.

I finally got my munitorum crates and the magnavent.
This is the first time I'm doing official GW scenery and it is freaking awesome. Comparing to pegasus the level of detail is amazing. It is kind of what happens with GW minis vs the rest of the minis.
Also, crates are really useful. And now I'm considering doing magnets to have the doors closed or open.

Anyone here bought multiple copies of shadow war that would like to get rid of their orks?

I need an economical source of boyz for gorkamorka.

I'm seeing those Boyz sprues selling for under $20 shipped. The Battle for Vedros sets, if you can find them, had 20 choppa/slugga boyz and five nobz each. Also, Deffkopta and a Warboss. Well worth $45 or whatever they were selling for.

I'm telling you, those containers are the bomb. You can even use the 40k special rules for them, and they're really funny. Like you can find inspiring IG Primers in them or a rampaging Xeno. The barrels and crates are just perfect too. Now that I've championed those. I will also say that the Promethium Relay Pipes are another box well worth picking up. They hook right up to the incinerators/furnaces/Haemotrope reactors and provide long runs of ground cover. They were clearly designed at the same time as the Mechanicus terrain- some of the hatches are exactly the same. You also get a cool control panel that makes for a nice objective.

You know Vlad, that level of quality is exactly why I decided not to fool with anything else. I got that first set and I was like "you know what, I'm not going to cheap out on this". I would rather have less of the amazing Sector Mechanicus stuff than more of the lower quality terrain options out there. Nothing wrong with any of it, but I really want the Cadillac experience with it. I _like_ the premium option, and I am willing to pay more for it. I mean, it's great doing all the stuff with the Pringles cans, spray painting hamburger boxes and all that...I've done it myself. Used to stick toothpicks in Styrofoam TV packaging and call it an Ork fortress. But with this game I'm going all out on it for a reason so I don't want to settle.

My Galvanic Magnavent order got messed up (went with an Ebay seller) and they offered to make good on it by sending me the Promethium Forge earlier than they would restock the Magnavent. Which was fine, so that is on the way. I think I will get either the Mangavent or the Ferratonic Furnace and I'll be done with my industrial setting aside from maybe another Manufactorum. Servohaulers should be on the way from Doc's, can't wait to check those out. Of course my son is going to demand that you can control them...he already asked if the crane can pick up the crates.

I picked up some pretty inexpensive Eldar- a box of loose part Dire Avengers and a full Guardian set for about $40, bought a Wraithblade from Black Dagger to give them the specialist. Excited about doing a Biel-Tan color scheme on them, I've always loved that.

I'm kind of thinking about upgrading my Astra Militarium guys by using Tempestus Scions as the Veterans- the beret dudes, not the respirators. They come with hotshot lasgun packs too. I have no idea where you get Cadians with shotguns, they have them on the list but I can't find a set anywhere that has them as an option.

I think this week, if I don't get out to play a one off or two at GW, I may show my son a scenario with a single assassin

Yesterday while assembling the magnavent I had this amazing idea (saying it is amazing because it frankly is so, no way around it).
Mix Sector Mechanicus terrain with Deathforest.
- It has the potential to be visually stunning, with the "nature reclaims" style, like The Last of US, Odyssey to the West and Will Smith's I Am Legend
- The mix of imperium structures and wildlife should be strategically compelling
- It makes perfect sense thematically, since Armageddon is a jungle death world. With all these wars, I doubt any lawnmowing was done around the hives for decades if not centuries, so it is only logical that the jungle would make its way at least in the lower levels of the spire.
- You can get a deathworld forest kit for like half of GW price on amazon or ebay now.

Someone did that right when Shadow War came out. I think BGG has some pics of the terrain on a jungle board.

Depending on the hive, you could thematically fit the buildings into almost any terrain. Armageddon is one of the few 40k worlds that has a more plausible geographic variety with tundra, deserts, jungles, etc.

Or even turn back the clock and play it entirely on Ork terrain before the humans came in, burned it to the ground and moved the planet.

My knowledge of Armageddon is pretty much limited to Slitherine's Panzer General knock-off, which is actually a pretty decent game. but not great graphics, so it all looked kinda jungle-desert.
My wife saw the unpainted galvanic magnavent and is now interested in playing Shadow Wars. I don't think that will stick, but is a testament to how impressive is the scenery. I am definitely adding deathworld to it.

Yeah, I might do some Deathworld Forest myself- I was actually thinking about it more for AOS though. But sure, you can use any terrain with SWA. What I am really waiting for in terms of terrain right now is that drill-thing that is shown in the schematic art inside the box. All of the other pieces are shown and have come out, but that thing isn't yet. It looks awesome.

They really should have just called it 40k Skirmish or something, to be quite honest. I mean, only three of the factions are even supposed to be on Armageddon. And all of the Sector Mechanicus stuff isn't really exclusive to Armageddon.

In other news...not to shill, but Miniature Market just got in a bunch of Novus Design terrain pieces...some good industrial stuff like barrels, "atmosphere exchangers", that kind of stuff. Looks like they'd go well with Mechanicus terrain. Maybe green stuff your own aquilas and reliquaries onto them.

Just about done painting the Necron Immortals and Deathmarks. They are mostly super easy (Leadbelcher, Nuln Oil, Runefang Steel, Necron Compound...you are 90% finished). But they have some tricky bits like these damn cables and recessed parts on their weapons. I kept the paint scheme really simple on them with just the green to pop out from the otherwise metal look. I really hate the models though. They look good, but they are REALLY fussy to build.

Next up is either going to be finishing the Orks, which I feel like I totally fucked up and may just nuke and start over, the Tau (which were nuked and started over), or the Eldar if they come in the mail tomorrow. Really kind of hope to do the Eldar next. I have the Wraithblade from Black Dagger in and it's built, looks awesome.

One thing I have really loved about all of this is collecting the different teams. I like having a "sampler platter" of all the 40k factions, I think that's really fun. And with the Special Operatives, you get to pick some elite stuff to go with them. The only factions I don't have right now are Harlequins (maybe later, really want to do a Miami Vice color scheme with them), CSMs (coming with 8th edition starter), Sisters (waiting for plastic...........) and Inquisition. Inquisition really doesn't excite me, but I suppose if I could whip up Eisenhorn and his retinue that would be pretty awesome.

I went by GW store yesterday to buy some Agrax Earthshade and ended up buying the heavy machinery, haulers or whatever. It is all good stuff, but the centerpiece crane is particularly impressive, and can be also used to climb into otherwise unreachable areas. My son is already asking how his team is supposed to drive those things... I think we'll need to add a houserule for vehicles, leaving those unmovable might be too high of a toll on his imagination. A great touch is the toolbox and the fire-extinguisher - with official description being "because in the grim darkness of the far future safety is still a top concern."

Painting this sector mechanicus is the easiest thing ever. I really can't imagine how to screw it up even trying.
