I wonder about the wisdom of this as it could really cannibalize their physical sales like no other.

Then again, I've held off buying the game because I know that it currently would not get played to the level it would deserve; however I'll be all over a digital version if its reasonably priced. So maybe it will expand more than cannibalize.

It absolutely will. Fortunately for Isaac, it's made it through three print runs and sold thousands and thousands of copies. Now he's going to re-sell the same game to the same people all over again.

That is, I play the same way no matter if my opponent is a zombie or demon, I just see them as differently-sized HP sponges. The only exception are Slimes and I feel that if all monsters were as good as that one, the game could actually be great.

My group is only four scenarios in, and have only seen maybe 7-8 different kinds of monsters, and I find this hard to credit. The initiative spread of the cards remaining each monster deck is very significant when planning your turn. Whether monsters have a ranged or melee attack makes a huge difference, of course. Some monsters interact with elements in ways that can change your tactics. You want to be aware of which monsters can heal and who they might heal. Other monster special abilities like shield and retaliate call for specific tactics. I could go on, with just the monsters we've seen so far.

Edit: Also sometimes the monsters will pull a card that will completely change the group's planning for the turn. Like we planned to gang up on these 3 guards and melee them to death, but now they will retaliate against all of our strikes, and that plan means eating a ton of damage. Or, we planned on staying out of range of those archers, but now they got bonus move/range, and are going to focus fire 3-4 attacks on Chris if we don't do something.
