I looked at Fireball Island on their website when it was first mentioned here. I concluded they were adding so much unnecessary crap just to cater to the Euro-fanatics and stretch goals, making for a very different game. I passed.

Return to Dark Tower looks like it'll get the same treatment. Pass.

They should have looked the word up before naming their company.
restoration |ˌrestəˈrā sh ən|
noun
• the process of repairing or renovating a building, work of art, vehicle, etc., so as to restore it to its original condition.
Random Changes Games would be more accurate.

In contrast you have Winning Moves, who produces exact duplicates, right down to the bumps on the mountains in their reprint of The Game of Life. They’re going out of their way to cater to the complete nostalgia crowd. These are far more mainstream games with a potential audience in the millions, and they're hook is that they're delivering the EXACT same thing you had in your youth.

I spoke with Rob for a hot minute at the Restoration booth. While waiting for he and his partner's signatures to dry on my poster, I asked "will your Dark Tower 'retire' my original copy?" He replied, "No. It will not take away your childhood memories."

I thanked him and moved on. It was late in the evening, minutes before closing. All of the vendors (myself included) were pretty tired and eager for the lights to go off....

Here's what I know. I demo'd Mythic Battles: Pantheon at the Origins Game Fair. Right beside me? Return to Fireball Island. I was beside that game for five hours. Clever production quality, no doubt. Watching adults enthusiastic initial reaction wane was a little more telling. It's a gimmicky marble game. It was a gimmicky marble game in the 80s. The difference in 2018 is added complexity, and bigger price tag. Much bigger IMO. No thanks.

Dark Tower. Gimmicky, and pretty lame by today's standards. But I love the production of this game, even if I had to get my Tower repaired after thirty years (it still works, come on over). The music is great, the tower is magnificent, the board is subtle, and the BOB PEPPER ILLUSTRATIONS ON THE BOX AND IN THE TOWER ARE WORTH SECONDARY MARKET PRICES. Also, the Orson Welles commercial is glorious.

I doubt I'll have any interest in this return to the Tower, but I'll keep my eye on it's development.

I asked the Bob Pepper question on Twitter...they can’t get him to play ball, so it’s the same situation they had with Dragonmaster.

The Bob Pepper art is at least 65 percent of what makes the game memorable and atmospheric.

Dragonmaster may have better illustrations than The Dark Tower.

But I didn't say it.

I'd wager that 95% of the buyers of the Dark Tower reprint have never seen a copy in real life, working or otherwise. They're not buying a second copy. This is a Hajj. They're buying it because it's deemed something someone in their position should do.
