I've been thinking about getting this cool choose-your-own-adventure book since I love Mad Max. Anyone play around with any of these books by Joe Dever?

I also see that you can play around with them for free.

Never having played many of the RPG books growing up, I played Freeway Warrior a couple years ago for the first time. For me, it was a better idea in theory rather than practice. A lot of the game consists of blind choices, like a normal CYOA book, but combat and attribute tests come down to RNG (i.e., use the random number chart in the book) as well, for a nearly-completely random experience.
My playing the game rapidly devolved into reading the same beginning paragraphs over and over, trying to find a safe path through the dense thicket of lethal choices in the book before I got frustrated and bored and gave up.
I'm probably a victim of my own expectations regarding what I thought the book should be rather than what it is, which is kind of like an analog version of Dragon's Lair. However, I never got very far and it might be a better game book than I'm giving it credit for.

i used to raid KayBee Toy outlets for as many choose-your-own-adventure RPG-style books I could get. They were amazing. They even have one Marvel one (Fantastic Four vs Dr Doom ) where there were two books you and a buddy would read at the same time, it was wild.
Lots of them had die rolls too which was really exciting. Man i loved those things.

Joe Dever is one of my gaming heroes. I just bought $100 worth of Lone Wolf RPG stuff at Gen Con yesterday that I may never use just because I love the worlds he created.
I had all 4 books as a teen. They're pretty brutal, especially since you’re penalized for having too many items and it’s not always easy to refill your canteen. They’re also the last game series he wrote, I think, and you can tell he incorporated things he learned from his earlier series. The story itself is pretty good, and it presents an interesting take on the U.S. in a post-nuclear world.
If you liked Freeway Warrior, I would definitely recommend the Lone Wolf books on Project Aon. The story is better and the world has great lore.
