Diplomacy--- which version?

Diplomacy--- which version? was created by Smeagol
Looking to play Diplomacy with my gaming club, consists of aging geeks who all wish they had played but never have.
New compact edition has punched cardboard pieces.
Big box Avalon hill edition looks to be close to the same price.
Which one do I want, or will it matter in any way?

Yep, the rules haven't changed. I like this ones with wooden blocks best as they're easy for me to show which piece is moving where and which is supporting.

No version of Diplomacy is worth the time it will take to play it. It can easily take several hours to play, and it is entirely possible that at least one player will be eliminated early on. The game tends to stabilize into long-lasting stalemates punctuated by briefly exciting betrayals than can sometimes result in strained friendships.
A decade ago, I would have recommended that you instead play A Game of Thrones. It delivers the best parts of the Diplomacy experience in less than half the time, with more interesting decisions each turn in terms of token placements.
Now I would recommend that you instead play Battle for Rokugan. It is a streamlined and re-themed version of Game of Thrones, delivering a similar overall experience in a brisk 60-minute game that is loaded with bluffing and tough decisions.

Most people think that Diplomacy is best played online or by meeting a couple times a week to do the move. You can easily use Whatssap and the like to communicate. This gets rids of most of the problems (pseudo player elimination, long play time, having to talk with people so otherrs don't suspect) while keeping the fun.

We have the luxury of leaving the game out for months if needed......so maybe we’ll do long term.
We have played a lot of game of thrones.

Also please note: Battle for Rokugan is utter garbage.

I have a second edition copy that I thrifted that's yours for the cost of shipping but some of the colors are missing a piece (none are missing more than one piece) and a couple have extra. I've never played so I don't know if all the pieces per nation are needed.
