What's the best Empire-Builder board game?

Not necessarily a 4X game although I suspect for many it will be. Use your own definition for building an empire.

The answer is EURORAILS. Thank you.

Back on topic: THROUGH THE AGES is really good. It's hits the notes for me, making me feel like I am shaping a culture and doing my own thing. Contrast to ECLIPSE, which I also like, I feel like we're all doing the same thing. I might have better guns or something, but we're all aliens shooting stuff.

CLASH OF CULTURES is good too, and delivers on the Exploration part at the expense of some clunk.

After just three plays I have really fallen in love with Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn. It's just incredibly tight and perfect and gives you everything you need in an "empire" game while still falling within a 90 minute play time. I also have yet to fall out of love with Ascending Empires which remains one of my all time favorites. Star Trek: Ascendancy is also a huge amount of fun. I love the movement system and the way the different races really help to capture that Star Trek feel.

Im surprised to see Eclipse even get mentioned. To me, that’s just a conquest game with heavy military focus. Through the Ages has lots of options on how to build and expand your empire.

In modern designs, there seems to be a lot of cross-over between Empire building and Engine building. I love Through the Ages, but it seems to be more the latter, just like another game I love, Innovation. Maybe it's the lack of a map in both?

I really like Clash of Cultures, too, but it's been so long since I've played it (a shame, really). It's definitely in the former camp, I think.

I keep seeing good things about the new Civilization game, so thanks for yet another endorsement. I'll have to check it out soon.

I enjoyed Empires of the Void II when I tried it about a month ago, but it hasn't made it back to the table since so I can't give a great assessment of it.

TI4, and that should be a full stop from me. However, I’m also going to give a huge nod to Civilization: A New Dawn. I think I’ve played it a dozen times in just the last month, it’s terrific.

I see it as an economic game first and foremost.

I would probably give the nod to Clash of Cultures, though I also have gone a long time without playing it. Frankly, this is a genre I don't play m in general.

This thread has helped me realize that this is my favorite type of game. I need to add that I also adore both Mare Nostrum: Empires and Struggle of Empires.
