Edit: I ask because I've played this game a bunch of times and nobody has ever gone all-out Risk attacking everyone. Seems like its more the player and not the game that's the problem as its definitely not a Risk-like game to me.

I'm that guy when I play this game. It probably stems from being one of the big boxes that we played at a group that had all fallen love with building castles or farms or trade routes in middle times Europia, and I was tired of conflict in games being who got the 3 sheep tile. Really just wrong time, wrong place. And.....some of those euro guys cringe at any form of direct conflict, so there was that, too....

Clash of Cultures Reprint / new edition!

boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/299659/clash...s-monumental-edition

looks like Zev at wizkids is helping to bring it back to life.

$140 MSRP is pretty wild, but it does include both the expansion and the Aztecs mini-exp in it.

I think there's a small amount of new material and many tweaks/rebalances as well. A buddy of mine has been playtesting this.

I saw this too, thanks for bringing it back from the dead! I'm tempted but that price tag is yikes. A lot is going to depend on how much is tweaked, I have all of that content.

I think this game is great if you're looking for that classic PC-ish 4x civ experience.

Hopefully the upgrades can be implemented without rebuying, because there is no universe where I'm spending $140 for a new copy.

I've wanted to play this game for a while now but $140 is not cheaper enough from choking on the OOP price of the expansion to really justify it for myself. I'd be 100% in for a rational price.

$140 is pretty steep. The threads say the expansion material is included into the new edition, but seems to have brought most of its aftermarket price too.

I still have my 1st edition and bought the expansion when it was still at retail. I really like Marcussen's games, but this isn't likely to make me upgrade.

Despite owning the original with expansion, I'm interested to see how the new edition turns out. Really like the game and glad it'll get into more hands.

Are the expansion cultures still optional or are they baked into the game now? I can see it working either way.

I'd be interested to know what Civ games people prefer to Clash of Cultures.

I really like the mechanisms and flow of clash, it is probably my preferred Civ game, but I do agree it can become a bit to Risk heavy and suffer last turn madness. However I have not found a Civ game i prefer to it. Through the Ages is very euro efficiency focused and lacks an evocative map, Francis Treshams is too long, Innovation is great but a chaotic card game from another genre. Space games like Ascending Empires and TI are similar in some respects but emphasize different things, TI is more of an epic and AE is more of a royal rumble game. In the end i tend to feel Clash does a classical civilisation game the best of those i've tried.

With Clash, the "last turn madness" you mention can be mitigated by using the variable endgame included in the original edition. As far as I'm concerned that should be the default mode of play.

I like Through the Ages a little more these days, but besides that it isn't a genre I'm overly enamored of.

I sold off my first edition and Civilizations in anticipation of a second edition, but it looks like I might as well have hung on to them, though I'd still come out OK. I was expecting both a lower combined price point and a more thoroughgoing revision. Ah well.
