This is one of the reasons I traded my copy of Talisman for Runebound (and several other games) way back in the day. Runebound has a staged path of improvement. You go from Green challenges to Yellow challenges to Blue to Red. So, you both know the threat level of what you're encountering so you don't get slaughtered by a dragon (followed by a vampire, followed by...) and can see yourself making progress by dealing with increasingly tough foes. You can also travel in more than two directions on any given turn...

But Talisman was originally written with the same mindset that Dungeonquest was: Sometimes you just die! Isn't that FUN?! Game design has, uh, come a long way.

Yes? I mean I love Dungeonquest so maybe I'm not the one to ask ;) We play Talisman with way softened death rules though, since it takes forever already without just having to start over randomly 2hrs in. Dungeonquest's entire charm is it's random super lethality though.

Curious to hear if you'll like Xia. I think you got great advice in this thread that is surprisingly non-contradictary.

Like the Bard said: As you like it. There are many people here that agree with you. I'm just not one of them. My opinion on many GW designs in their earlier days is pretty low, despite the amazing background that came attached to most of them.
