File this in the whiskey-tango-foxtrot category.

I have no clue what to think of this.

Huh. Sounds like CMON are really sticking their necks out here...

Scheduled to be launched on Kickstarter in 2021

Oh, wait. Never mind.

After CMON's earlier KS this year, I'm not surprised at all. The partnership is interesting, but if there's money to be made...

I love comic books. I grew up reading comics, and never stopped. But I think that the comic book is an increasingly obsolete form of entertainment. A new comic book costs at least $4.00, but you can read it in 10 minutes or less. Faster, if you don't take time to appreciate the artwork. Dollar for dollar, minute for minute, most other forms of entertainment today are a better value. Today, the comic industry functions like a farm league for intellectual properties, and the two big comic companies are now wholly-owned subsidiaries of massive entertainment companies that make movies from those IPs.

Comics as a tie-in for boardgame product lines? No, thanks. Reminds me too much of the way Saturday morning cartoons all turned into toy commercials in the '80s. However, the comic book intro in the rules to Psycho Raiders is brilliant, and I make every first-time player read it before we start playing.

I purchase trade-paper online now for about $8 a copy because they're always on sale. But yeah, you need to be buying for the artist not the story, because frankly, you can read a 30-pager in about 90 seconds if you set your mind to it. It has to be about the art.

Comic book shops and game shops. They go together. I think CMON is looking for ways to book revenue regardless of what it is, and they think this is a good idea. They become a Nerd company instead of a Game company, and that increases revenue. Keeps the lights on. "Merch" is next, maybe they can make cosplay costumes after that.

I really like the Android art and milieu, and the poppy colors. But I think Asmodee would do better going with a TKO or Dark Horse that do comics for a living. I'd wager CMoN came to Asmodee and made an offer, because they needed IP to work with. Asmodee can take a flyer because if it fails, who cares? Nobody's losing their job because they licensed out IP to a line of business they have no intention of pursuing. And if CMON wants to advertise for Asmodee products so much the better.

It just feels weird to have a game company publish a comic book about another game company's products. It's like Chevrolet selling T-shirts with "Ford" on the front of them. In theory aren't these guys competing for the same dollar?

Long story short -- the whole industry is starting to feel like a scam. It used to be you had companies like Days of Wonder and FFG out there swinging an axe, cutting their own paths into new places. Now it just feels like a bunch of guys all in the same room trying to figure out how to get more money out of the same number of customers.

Good post.

Big Gamestop trying to sell merch because of margins and synergies vibes.

I can't wait to check out stretch goals such as "reader letters" and "sea monkey advertisements."
