BSG is a game I sometimes love and sometimes am bored with. It’s completely dependent on the draw of the cards.

FFG and other companies use Lovecraft because its free IP - no need for licensing fees.

Android seems the better choice for a BSG re-theme.

I think we’ve reached the point where we can say the Arkham Universe is inspired by the Cthulhu mythos, and not get twisted into knots over what a shitbird Lovecraft was. Arkham has just become so divorced from the original source material. I have meet like 3 fans in my life that have actually read/attempted to read Lovecraft. Not unlike Wizard of Oz. Ask folks about what the themes and messages are and people will say stuff like believing in yourself, friendship, family. No ones going to say the it’s about keeping the US dollar on the gold standard.

Anyway, interested to see if this is actually going to be an Arkham re-theme of BSG, and what they do with it if it is, but not really excited by the concept.

By and large, I don't do retreads. I especially don't do them if the original game didn't work for me. I picked up BSG when it first came out and we tried playing it three times. All three times, it ended up a very flat experience. Maybe it was just our group because I know everyone was raving about it and I thought it must be this really great thing. But it felt very mechanical and the Cylons often seemed uncontrollable and the whole betrayal element just fell flat for us. Dunno. I can see the quality of the design. It just didn't work, so I traded it. That experience certainly doesn't make me look forward to another Cthulhu game with the same framework.

On occasion, BSG is a stunning play. Other times it's flat. I'm ok with that, bu you have to set expectations appropriately.

Lovecraft must sell well. Let's face it, you could rehost this game in two dozen different ways and it wouldn't even be hard. But publishers keep coming back to Lovecraft for some reason.

Obviously Lovecraft is relevant to this concept, but I am also thinking about Gene Wolfe. This game idea sounds like it might have been inspired by reading his books An Evil Guest and Home Fires back to back.

What’s the point of playing BSG if you can’t be Hot Dog?

It sounds very "Dead of Winter"... maybe more than BSG? I don't have enough BSG experience to really tell. I think this will be a "wait for reviews" kind of thing.

I will say, that's a pretty good title.

It sounds like a complete retread of BSG to me: skill checks with face down cards from everyone, preserving resources, loyalty changes during the game, etc. Nothing wrong with that if that's what's working for them, but it's certainly a far cry from their more innovative work of the past.

Guy who did Outer Rim. I'll wait to hear about it, but no plans to buy it...

Glad they gave the nod to Corey K, they didn't have to do that. That's the classy move here IMO.

Looks exactly like BSG to me. The similarities to Dead of Winter reside in the fact Dead of Winter was heavily influenced by BSG.

Love the title.

I'm keen to review this, but I'm kind of with Michael. It feels like a plastic knock-off our cultural paranoia embedded in the BSG reboot as 9/11 and our collective trauma and suspicion were so intrinsically wed to that property.

Oh yeah, that was the other thing. I was unpleasantly surprised to see miniatures in it. Seems like just for the monsters. Totally unnecessary.
