I'll bet Twister sales have not been so hot lately.

So is this a board game with a robot gm or a video game with a $175 fancy cardboard controller a la "Steel Battalions"?

I'm going to give it a year or so to see how it shakes out. Let that new car smell fade a bit to see just how much folks really dig it. Does it have a lot of casual appeal or is it just for the die hard dungeon crawl folks to get an easy fix?

Knowing FFG there a bazillion blister pack mini add ons, card deck add ons, and now probably cardboard terrain packs in the works.

As well as a Star Wars version.....

I think it has more casual appeal than the other Descent games.

I would wager that the best player count is 2. Solo and you ask yourself why not a video game. So far we’ve handled reading/decision making pretty well at 2. More than 2 and it might be a tad more cumbersome given the interaction with the app. Probably then you would want one person running app interface — not a dealbreaker but a bit slower

Fourth scenarios and about 8 hours in…this one blew me away.

Warning: Spoiler!

The reality of it is that this is MUCH more than a dungeon crawler. This is a full blown RPG adventure. The level of detail and specificity is unmatched, only Gloomhaven really comes close.

Sessions are about 2 hours on the mark every time so far. One thing that is REALLY nice is that is fairly easy, if you are short on time, to kind of abbreviate some things. It was like 3am last night so when there were no combat encounters happening I shifted to doing allowing searches/explore actions if the character is in the same room and also allowing for one explore action to do multiple times. I don’t feel like it tremendously impacted the game, but I wouldn’t do it if there was a time pressure element involved.

Every session feels like a full adventure from start to finish…I would really like to see one-offs and maybe even hour long mini-adventures.

Classic gamer. "It's a fantastic well rounded rpg adventure in just 2 hours...... wish it was shorter" :p

Nah, at 2 hours it’s just right- but I’d like to be able to bust it out a smaller scenario from time to time.

Scenario 5-

Warning: Spoiler!

There’s been a lot of “the writing is bad” talk. Folks, there ain’t ever been a board game with great writing and dialogue. This game is on par or better across the board. But the -scenario- writing is possibly the best I’ve ever seen in a DC.

I've got a copy of Gloomhaven that I haven't played yet that's immunizing me from that.

Michael, you gave the impression that time is not as limited as in MoM2 (lots to see but you need to be efficient with your time ao you'll skip lots of stuff). I take it this is not happening in this Descent?

Threadomancy alert: I don't know what it is that reminded me of this thread, but I remember that it was quite the wrangling over reviews/promotions, Vasel, whether the game was worth it, etc. It's now two years later and there were a fair number of proclamations that not only was this the new generation of dungeon crawlers, but would also inspire a bunch of imitations because it was so groundbreaking. Given that Descent 3.0 has only had one expansion in those two years and there didn't seem to be a proliferation of crawlers in the time since then, I was wondering what people thought about it, 'lo these many months (and presumed sessions) since the game's release? MB was the only unabashed fan by the end and he's no longer in the board game scene.

I'd forgotten this was still a product line (repeat for pretty much every non-LCG game released by FFG in the past 5 years or so).

My personal reaction to it: it felt like an effort to play and not one that was entirely worth it. Also waaay too much time spent staring at a tablet (or its mirrored version on the TV screen).
