I think you mean to say the target audience shifted from kids to adults.

Virabhadra wrote: I'm looking over the previews for Age of Annihilation and it feels like we traded the game's resolutely wackadoo heart for "playable factions."

I'm staring at the Hasbro crowdfunding page, and I have questions:

1) So are these (completely unappealing) factions new or do they have some connection with OG Heroscape? Because...
2) They look terrible. It's like the game can't decide if it wants to be "grimdark" or "whimsical," so it's landed smack in the middle at "boring."
3) Is there anything worse in boardgame-caliber minis than molding them in color so that the shiny obnoxious colors absolutely obliterate all of the (inevitably shallow) detail?
4) Why all of the obnoxious colors? It looks like a Dick Blick catalog vomited on the internet

Me no likey.

You can buy a crap ton of the original heroscape stuff on eBay for $250, and it will come painted and very battle tested.

I'm not the market for this anyway but it looks like $250 worth of cheap.

Also the website is obnoxious.

These figures should have NIKITA agents-level paintjobs.

Well...
My jets are significantly cooled.
That price point is gross.

BAD
As I mentioned before, I'm taking umbrage with what I'm calling "visual backwards compatibility." This set doesn't have it. Even when WOTC shoehorned their recycled D&D minis into the system, they took the effort of mounting them on brown bases with the 'scape terrain stickers.

Watching this past weekend's Hasbro commercial (aka Hasbro Pulse), I immediately scoffed when told "Avalon Hill is all about immediate accessibility. There are no, and will never be, any SPRUES. These miniatures can be taken right out of the box and played. They can easily be understood by their color coding." In the same breath, "The dragon wings will have to be snapped on."

(of course HS dragon wings have to be snapped on, I'm just saying)

NEUTRAL
The stretch goals are great nods for those few weirdos that followed along with the sparse Heroscape narrative. Sgt. Drake in a third iteration is nifty. I fucking love Solen on his mature dragon. And yet, I think it's positively idiotic to have an otherwise neat "evil Raelin" sculpt mounted onto a winged dragon. RAELIN ALREADY HAS WINGS.

I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts the plastic used will be that table top grade formula found in the new HeroQuest.

POSITIVE:
I'm sure the units have cool mechanics and will be fun to play. CVN poached a lot of ideas from the hard core fan base ("war council"), and those rules have most certainly seen countless hours of play testing and refinement. And the terrain looks great.

$$$
IDK. I'm off to celebrate National Heroscape Day in two weeks. Maybe I can extract a bit more information from some "war council" members. But for right now, this morning, with one cup of coffee in me - I'm feeling kind of 'meh.'

The Facebook page is filled with hopeless/hopeful commentary about it but the overall feeling is that Hasbro STILL doesn’t understand its target market.

I will not be buying this, and I am in the dead center of the Venn diagram where Money, Time, and Rabid Fanbase connect. It should have been called Age of Abomination.

It seems like it has stalled out at <3000k, faaaaaaaar short of the 8k they say they need. 19 days left.

Man, the other products currently funding (and woefully underperforming) on Hasbro's site look like trash as well. None of it looks to be worth anything close to what they're asking. Seems like their pricing is more in line with what you'd expect to pay for an OOP kickstarted item on the secondary market.

I remember buying 2 master sets at Toys'R'Us clearance for $10 total a couple months after this game first released. Like they were already marked to $10 then they did buy-one-get-one just to get rid of the dud game faster. How far its come.

I had an absolute blast playing beside 21 others during National Heroscape Day two weekends ago. I haven't played in over 5 years, but I still managed to go 3-1.

My adoration for HS is rekindled, and I won't back this project. The terrain pieces are genuinely exciting. The rest? Meh. I don't need 5 new factions, no matter how the narrative is written. And I sure as hell don't need colored plastic bits & bases.

I've already waxed philisophical about those mini attributes...

Anyway, it's comically sad to see the brain trust at Haslab refresh the page to better detail content, map scenarios, and shifting plastic color. Show me some beige bases with stickers on top and maybe I'll change my tune.

I suspect there's too much invested in this project to let it die on the vine. If I had to guess, they'll retool and relaunch in some sort of capacity.

I think it works out to be the same price and the same size as that stupid unpainted CMON zombie Galactus, too.
