Hey,

I got this game a few months ago and just recently started reading the rules until I tried the other day to play a solo Stellar game (with only one system). Once I was actually playing it, it didn't seem that difficult, and it seems to me I really might enjoy it. The problem is that the stellar game is quite limited, with only 3 planets in one system.

Of course, the rebels lost :) but it was fun...

Anyone here has played and enjoyed this game? It seems to me like this kind of game (mixing individual RPG-like characters in a wargame like game with military units) could really be fun and interesting to play, although it also seems like it will lead to very long playing times. Any other modern games like this around? (Quest for the Dragonlords comest to mind, but it's fantasy and I haven't played it...)

I have owned this game for more than 20 years now, but played it just once. The rules are pretty formidable, but my best friend and I finally deciphered them enough to play the first scenario. We didn't finish, but we did play long enough that the rebel heroes were in pretty ragged shape. I can't think of any modern games quite like this, but there was a similar game, probably published around the same time, called War of the Ring. No, not the Fantasy Flight game, but the original from SPI. I played that one a couple of times, and it seemed more accessible than Freedom in the Galaxy, though still difficult to learn.

Swords & Sorcery was also in a similar vein. Warning: game contains incredibly feeble puns.

It did give the gaming world killer penguins though, gotta give credit for that!
