Who said tulip bulbs don't make good Ameritrash theme?

This week, the main suspects in a major fraud case are put on trial for a tulip bulb speculation bubble described as a pyramid scheme. Reads like a good crime novel. Too bad there's not much on it in English. Just a few quotes then:

Stakes are high!

The minimum stake is 100 thousand euro. The projected returns are 30 percent. After only a short time the funds has 80 million euro. ‘It is the first time in history that so much money from outside is being invested in the bulb industry’

Greed! Stupidity!

‘For years we have done business with each other. If there were any problems, we dealt with it internally. We never put everything on paper. Now my solicitor says: “Why on earth did you do that”.’ In the autumn rain Arie digs up a bulb of the CH58 and shows how hard it has grown. “isn’t it beautiful? There is nothing wrong with it,’ He laughs, shaking his head. ‘How did it come to this? Well, what do you call it? Pure greed. It is just as in a casino. You want more and more. One last bet.’

Betrayal!

We sold 3000 kilos at 180 euro per kilo of that one. That batch has now been valued at 9 euro per kilo. Bought by people from outside who simply deny that a transaction had taken place. Those are bad losers.

Yup, definitely Ameritrash

Yeah, but I like Scott's description: "Your goal is to make smart investments, artificially raise prices, fleece your network at the best time, and then make your escape from Tulipmania with the most money."

Nary an "impress your leader" in sight.

And still a retarded theme to base a game on...

I don't see what's so retarded. The theme is financial speculation, not tulip farming. I for one would love to see a good "bubble" game, let's see how this one fares.

I had a quick look at the rules of the Tulip Mania game and it looks like dry accounting to me. All the drama taken out of it. But hey, they wasted the 30-years war theme on Wallenstein! That's the great thing about designing games: you can take the best themes and still have a crap game.

I think the game looks kind-of cute and fun. I'd play it. The box art reminds me of Monet.

I agree about the theme. Tulips seem rather wussy. If it wasn't for the historical precedent, it would/should be about some other commodity. Hmmmmm....how about nuclear missiles?

alright, tulips don't involve slavery. if that makes you feel better, try a game on sugar, coffee, gold, silver, spices...

I'd want more fleecing and less accounting, for certain.
