Anybody played the new Blackbeard?

I remember looking longingly at the old Blackbeard (AH) on the game store shelf, but never got the chance to play. Now that the new GMT version is out, or at least shipped to the pre-orderers, can anyone around here chime in with their thoughts on the game? After downloading and reading the rules from GMT it sounds pretty cool.

I wish I could say "yes" on this one, but my preordered copy arrived exactly 10 minutes ago. I'm trying to decide if I should blow off the rest of the work day and start punching counters or show some level of restraint and wait until the weekend.

Punching counters at work, hey? Ahh, those were the days...card sleeving, sorting, putting things into Plano boxes...all on the clock at one of the worst jobs I've ever had.

I tried to sneak in a preorder of BLACKBEARD at the last minute...it's not here yet, but I'm charged...just waiting...looks pretty great based on the rules.

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow, but there's a UPS truck in the area right now, so you never know....

I'm also awaiting some gameplay comments from people here. Or perhaps a review on the front page...

I work from home about 60% of the time. Most of the time I'm jumping through my own asshole trying to get things done, but it's slow right now. Well, that, and the fact that I'm in full-on "Fuck it; it's beautiful day, let's sit on the deck, drink a mojito [the mint is up!], a read this rule book" mode.

Wow...typing that out pretty much says that it's time go mix my drink right now and head out with this glossy new box to read the rules....

I did preorder it although I don't expect it to arrive this week with the typical customs delay... still, I'm very much looking forward to playing it... It seems to be a cool game, and I like the fact that non-active players get to act as the enemies of the active player (just like in one of my favorite games: Marvel Heroes). This usually does wonders against downtime :)

Ha. Acquaintances who don't work from home (as I do) think I must spend my days out on the back porch in flip flops tapping away on the laptop like some mover and shaker in Hollywood. I like to tell them that if you see me outside during working hours, it's because I'm cooling off from having to deal with some idiot who thought it was a good idea to do something stupid and fuck up some servers, and the guy is constantly giving me the "it's not my problem" BS about it because he's not a contractor and I am.

However, I might make an exception if Blackbeard makes an appearance as expected tomorrow.

Anyone have any word on this yet? How is solo? I'm very curious, I might even be able to bring some people together to play it.

Guess what assholes? I just posted the longest piece of verbal diarrhea you've ever seen as a review of BLACKBEARD in this forum.

no surprise, the euro first impressionists are grumbling:

www.boardgamenews.com/index.php/boardgam..._pirate_impressions/

Dave and I noticed Tom rolling a die for no apparent reason. When questioned, Tom said that he assumed that whatever was happening in the game at that moment probably required a die roll

haha, Tom mocked dice rolling! he is pretty sharp!

But there was also a realization that much of the game play was repetitious

pretty much all boardgames are repetitious, they are limited by the nature of the medium. the key is, do you enjoy the activity that you are repeating? if yes: SWEET! if not: fuck this.

Tom suggested that the best way to play Blackbeard was to get all the players drunk and make them play the game using silly pirate accents.

fuck pirate accents. i am sick of reading forum posts going "ARRRRRRR" and people pretending to be pirates and trying to be funny with inane comments such as "PIRATES CAN BEAT UP DINOSAURS". that shit is so boring.

Thats funny. I did suggest we all get drunk and wear eyepatches next time. Kris's review is a great counterpoint to mine. I wouldn't call Kris Hall a "euro" guy. He very much is a fan of heavily themed longer games. His impression of the game is probably a little more euro influenced than mine, but he is a FFG playtester (WotR comes to mind) and I play wargames with him from time to time.

anyone who writes for BGN is tained by the euro, it's kind of like the one ring. just being in it's presence can corrupt you.
