I'm baffled as to what you mean by "too much attention" being paid to designers as there are very few threads, if any, that focus solely on designers.

You don't like it, fine. I do.

Being able to choose from the diverse content on F:AT is what I like and find interesting about this site.

I thought he was talking about the hobby in general, not just this site. Barnes' comment about some folks' willingness to fellate Wallace for an autograph says pretty much the same damn thing.

To get back to the game in question, unfortunately, the inability to play 2 in any useful fashion means, like most Wallace games, that "free" would still be too expensive to pique my interest.

Thanks much!

And now to get my wife to translate it to see if it's worth $100...

Kingput may have a differing view of the one time that we tried this game, but I only started having fun on the second-to-last turn (turn 7 of 8) - which is when the board finally started filling up with monsters, heroes, and military units. That's a bad sign for a supposedly delicious monster killfest.

I did enjoy the fact that I successfully fired off the only nuke in the game.

Translation of the 2 players-variant on french forum:

- 8 turns
- 3 cities (Sydney - Delhi – Cairo) are closed and not pllayable => distance between Rome & Tokyo is reduced to 1 MP

3 "secret cities" drawn/player

During play, 1st player to pass during the turn gets the "1st player" token for next turn

# of tokens / turn
Fixed1
Create/Heal: 5 (10 for Turn 1)
Move/Hide: 1
Heroes: 1
Military I: 1 infantry
Military II: -

Variable:
Attack (Turn/#): 1/2 - 2/3 - 3/3 - 4/4 - 5/5 - 6/6 - 7/7 - 8/8
Extra-Tokens (Turn/ # dice): 1/2 - 2/2 - 3/3 - 4/3 - 5/6 - 6/7 - 7/9 - 8/11

VP's
Secret cities: no change
1st ranked player in city (most cubes): 4 VP's
The other player doesnt' score any point
In case of tie: nobody gets any point
In case of tie with collateral damage cubes (black): 2 points
If majority of (black) collateral damage cubes, 2nd player gets 1 point. Tie for 2nd place = 0 point.

So I've finally played this and must say it's a fine game. Nothing special though, yet another area influence game, this time with an interesting theme though. Definitely not best AT game of 2010.

The whole question here is: how much are you willing to pay for an extremely good game, and MI IS and extremely good game.

It is the only game I had on the table in 2010 that all of my critical gaming buddies liked, and that says alot, sine they never agree.

The brilliance of the design, aside from the great action-selection mechanic, is the way the game starts calmly and doesn't look all that tense at first, but step by step begins to create these long strings of situations were different monsters interact with each other in a location, creating an almost fiendish puzzle were every move counts. In the final stages of the game it was incredibly intense planning. Honestly, I have rarely played a game in recent months with such tough decissions that ALL mattered.

The thing is, I am not sure if these situational intense moments manifest themselves with every play. I am almost reluctant to put it on the table again with the fear of being dissapointed about my second play.
That said, I'm pretty confident this is the kind of game that provides great AT moments with each play, given the smart design Wallace has put in here.

Overall, a fantastic game that perfectly combines theme with streamlined mechanics. Sure, the look of the game is a bit "busy" and most people seem to hate it, but I found it charming. It has a bit of that retro feel to it I appreciate.

I was lucky to snatch up a copy for 70 dollars. Yes, that is expensive, but honstly, I don't regret this. I rather by 1 brilliant game than 2 mediocre ones.
But hey, that is just me...

Oh man, I sure hope you're right, because I got the itch and bought it the other day. Paid a hell of a lot more than $70, too.

If only it didn't look like a wet sack of shit, I'd think of being interested...

Who knew that both Earth Reborn and Merchants & Marauders would be 2010 releases? I guess declaring something the best of the year only halfway through the year only seems silly in retrospect.

I feel lucky to have it available in my gaming circles. Game is wicked fun. A perfect mix of AT, wargame, euro, and hell why not, party game. :)

Or a host of others for that point. That being said, this sounds from all the "real time commentary" that it may really be the cat's meow.

Probably a big mistake but I kickstarted this sucker. 60$ for a copy with plastic mini's shipped to my door. Not a bad price but still, I never kickstarted anything and see no reason to but I've been wanting this for a couple of years now so... ah, probably a mistake.

I like how this thread is linked to on the Moongha Kickstarter page...

I'm not going to lie, I'm surprised this game took as long as it did to get funded . Maybe it was the higher required funds or something.

Not sure, but I'm going to back this (my first thing I've ever backed). I don't want to miss out on this game for the second time.

Barnes seal of approval and a designer who's games i like = a kickstarter i will actually back.

Also the postage to anywheres in the world sorta clinches it. Postage costs generally put me off kickstarter.
