Malloc and I have a disagreement on playing with Leaders. Malloc always want to play with leaders . He's heading on vacation but maybe he'll give his counter point to using leaders. I'm ok with leaders if I'm playing a big 6 hour massive game of Ti3. But he want to play with leaders when were playing the week night 4 player - 3 hour speed game of Ti3. Leaders and space mines and other shit are cool when you've played the game 20 times. Personally, when were playing a 3 hour speed round of Ti3 I'm just trying not to screw up.

Matt, good point about the RPG aspect of Ti3. I forgot how blown away I was the first time I played the game and I saw somebody getting into there role. Me and other players have done sub-optimal (non-Euro like) moves because it made sense for their role.

In fairness it was Natus who first pointed out to me there as an RPG aspect to the game - I hadn't really seen if before. He seems to think that it's all there is to the game which I disagree with obviously, but it's still a pretty insightful comment to make in the first place.

Those are some really interesting comments about the VP system too. I'd never seen it in that light and the criticisms do seem valid. I recall one game that I won by claiming a technology objective even though I'd been reduced to no fleet and just my home system by my enemies and it *did* seem a bit silly. At the time I justified it in my head (it had been a great game) by focusing on the fact that the goal of the game is to claim the Imperial throne, something steeped in countless centuries of honour and tradition. So perhaps in the alternative TI3 universe the other races *might* step aside once the new emperor has "proven" himself in whatever ways required. Or perhaps the Winnarian guardians only reveal their final secrets to such a person, giving him the insight and power to crush his foes no matter how parlous his position might look.

That is so awesome! That kind of thing only happens in games rich with theme. I remember one time in LnoE I refused to shoot the gasoline and kill the final Zombies, because Jenny was in the blast way, while the other hero player was saying "Just do it!". It was just like a movie!
