Age of Napoleon

Anyone here have any experience with it? Looks like reviews are very favorable, but the rulebook is a bit of a mess. Seems to have been a big to do game about 10 years ago. Still got legs?

Bought it, tried it once (with the supposedly revised 2nd edition rules), and was completely bamboozled. We limped through one play--or did we even finish? I can't remember--and I've never touched it since.

It's good if you can suss out the rules...but the question is if it's worth sussing out the rules. And it really isn't.

I figured it out back in the day at Atlanta Game Factory, my friend Peter and I managed to interpret most of the rulebook...it was cool, but at the end of the day, it's not worth the effort. There's better games that don't require you to wrestle the rulebook.

If it's good and cool once the rulebook is are sorted out, why shouldn't I attempt to work through the rules?

I guess, what I mean is...is there a better grand strategic game on the Naploeonic Wars? Is there a better game than AoN that covers this topic and plays in an evening (3-4hrs)?

Check out Napoleon Against Europe from Hexasim. English editions recently started shipping; my copy landed just before I left on vacation, so I can't say much beyond the aesthetics [lovely!] at this point. However, I think early reviews are just starting to come in at this point over at Der Geek.

Age of Napolean just struck me as too abstract, as well as a scale that was a bit too high level for my tastes. The history of Nappy Wars may be shite, but there is a fun game inside the box.

I am looking forward to the Hexasim game as well.

The rule book isn't that hard IMHO. (But I also had little problems understanding the Up Front rules.)

So I'd say it comes down to cost. I remember back in the days it was very cheap, like €15 or so. If you can get it for that much, go for it.

More than that, it's probably the most realistic game on the subject out there.
