This is going for £10 on boardgameguru (UK online retailer) at the moment.

I've liked Hammer and Richard III

what's the skinny with this one. Does it have replayability?

I haven't played it in while but...

The good:
£10 is good deal
It's quicker than Hammer or Richard III
Nice flow and swings - American's are strong in 1812 but British are stronger 1814
You can probably play it twice and flip the game for £10

The bad:
It's pretty far down on my list of favorite block games
I sold off my copy of it because I liked Quebec better as a short block game

I've come to enjoy War of 1812 more and more as time has gone by. In fact, between that and 1812: Invasion of Canada, preference is swaying back to War of 1812. It's a bit more accurate as far as matching the theme and it also includes the naval battles on the Great Lakes which is totally missing in 1812: Invasion of Canda

Originally, I bought it as a lite block game to play with my dad, but some of my gamer buddies have really taken to it.

It is far lighter than HotS or RII. There is no A-B-C, all units have an 'F' rating. Mostly it just '1', so most of the units will only hit on a one. However, there are a few such as artillery that are F2, so 2 or less.

Some other things about 1812:

* No cards
* Plays in an hour to an hour and a half
* American militia didn't sign up to invade Canada, so you have to roll to see if they'll move into Canada
* Tecumseh only comes into play if the British take Detroit
* Holding coastal towns and taking shipyards is key for naval assaults
* You score VPs by towns, lakes, and units on the board
* No increasing the steps of blocks, when they take hits the hits stay
* You get an amount of random blocks and can set them up anywhere during initial deployment (where is the opponents artillery or dragoons? Do they even have any?)
* There are optional rules in the rulebook for hidden, written orders and simultaneous movement, and these are a must
* Beautiful map

This game is very replayable (with its dynamic initial set-up), and is on my forever shelf. I know some prefer Quebec, but I'm still firmly in the War of 1812 camp. if Invasion of Canada wasn't as big a hit it is with my large casual gaming group, I would sell it off and keep War of 1812.

Definitely worth trying it out at that price.

Fantastic game.

SOLD

I'm happy with simplicity but i don't want another crash and bash style war game. Some nuance though appeals to me.
