This is one so many of us started on.

It's a great way to see if the hobby holds any interest for you.
The game itself probably won't hold your interest for too long, but it shows some of
the core principles of hex, counter, CRT style games.

And it's free.

Check out Nuklear Winter (not sure i got the title right). I haven't tried it, but Dr. Mabuse, who has impeccable taste, digs it. And it plays solo.

Edit: this one:

Wear something low-cut and head over to the Vassal Singles Bar. You may get lucky. We've been trying to get some folks together on Monday and Tuesday nights. Where on the planet are you?

Vassal is the only place you're going to find Warriors of God, and I doubt MMP will reprint. If you see a copy you might want to grab it just in case, and you won't have trouble unloading it if you don't like it.

No one thought to recommend Conflict of Heroes? The rulebook teaches you the game as you play, with later scenarios introducing new rules and units gradually. Yeah there's cards, but they're not text heavy.

I recommend Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! - Operation Barbarossa 1941 (second edition) if you can find it.

Tactical wargames are not usually the place to start for beginners. He can try the ASL route later. If I was going to do that I would also talk Combat Commander which plays well solo.

CoH are publishing a solo AI expansion for AtB.

I agree, and if you do decide to go tactical anyway I'd go with Valor & Victory because you can print the pieces on the cheap and play the simplified rule set. About $10 to give it a try and it's completely soloable. Also available on Vassal at no charge.

For $20 you can pick up What Price Glory? out of Special Ops magazine which has solid wargame principles and play and is relatively small and inexpensive.

D-Day at Omaha Beach and D-Day at Tarawa are both great solo wargames and D-Day at Peleliu will likely join their ranks when it is released.

While trying to find evidence of the Pocket Stalingrad sale, so I could look for future sales, I came across this old NYT article:
