Damn, this little package of dynamite has been out for 8 years now and still a favorite. 8 years?!
Quite possibly my favorite boardgame released in the 00s. The only board/cardgame I've played more is Condotierre but that's from the 90s.

What's the deal on the sequel, Distant Lands? I P500 (remember that?) that thing years ago and it passed the 500 mark awhile ago.

I'm guessing Jeff has been super busy with the auto racing games and trying to get NNG company running.

Maybe, but I thought all the work on his end was done and it was now just in the hands of GMT and their schedule to produce it.

From earlier this month seems like work is still being done?

It is crazy, right? Jeff Horger's stuff sells well at GMT but doesn't do well on P500... it's complicated.

Grand Prix is shipping at the end of the month. It took a while (two years, I even had a cancelled P500 in 2014 I rejoined this year).

When I discovered Manoeuvre, the fantasy version called Fury had just been announced. So I decided to wait for Fury instead of buying Manoeuvre. Seeing that Fury is still not released, is Manoeuvre worth it if you are not a huge Napoleonics fan?

There's a nod to the traits of certain Napoleonic era armies and key units. But the veneer is thin. Brits and French have elite units. American units have some fieldcraft traits. Otttomans are mobile. Austrians... suck? That's about it. I think the play really has nothing much to do with actual Napoleonic warfare.

It's the first "wargame" I really played a lot of. This is a good reminder that I need to break it out against my 13-year-old who plays Total War Napoleon with me.

I played a prototype version of Fury several years ago, and it's better. However, seeing as it's not published, Manoeuvre is still a very good game.

Clearly, I love Manoeuvre.

It's incredibly flexible in how you set-up play. There are 8 armies and they're tiered in the rulebook. If you want a close match play two armies next to each other in the tier order. If you want to give someone a handicap allow them to play an army a few levels up.

Additionally, with the random setup, you can, if you want, set the board up however you want if you want to give one side more of a challenge or create a scenario. We've even allowed one side to set their units up anywhere on their half. We played a 'War of 1812' game like this where the Americans could set up anywhere, but the British had to only start in their original last two rows.

The game comes with enough boards, you can have four, 2-player games going at once. You can even push more than 4 boards together to have 'Epic Manoeuvre' games.

We even play it campaign style. Starting with the bottom two armies, the winner plays as the same army next round the loser plays as the next army up the chain. 2 pts if you beat a lower tiered army, 3 if you beat a higher. After the battle with the french, top army, player with the most points is the campaign winner.

For the setting, in this case I prefer the Napoleonics over fantasy so P500'd Distant Lands and not Fury. True, it's pretty abstract, but there was actually a lot of thought in the army design. That's where the historical touches are.

I think this game is incredible.
