End of days stuff--CSW going to new forum system

On the heels of the major multi-day forum outage, Mr Kranz announced yesterday that even once the database recovery is complete and the Consimworld forums are back up and running, he is sufficiently unnerved by the experience to start the process of identifying new, modern forum software.

Who knows what they'll end up with, but there's already a lot of consternation that it might be a threaded system instead of the "one giant conversation spanning back to the dawn of time" style their regulars are accustomed to. The existing forums will be set to read-only and won't be converted over to the new system.

Sounds like an enormous project that's going to result in some unhappy users whatever direction they end up taking.

Heck, I'm half-annoyed that this new thread changed the order of the Most Recent Topics

I have very little stake in this, but what'd be cool -- if hard to implement -- is a nonthreaded approach for a game's prepublication period and a threaded approach after. The conversational nonthreaded approach is kind of nice when the game's not out and no one really knows much (apart from the designers/developers), but the nonthreaded approach is cumbersome once the game's out, there are conversations specific to individual rules, etc. I'm sure that's too idiosyncratic to ever do, but I do think there are virtues to both threaded and nonthreaded approaches.

I stopped going to csw for this reason. It's impossible to use without checking 8 times a day. It's what worries me about this site and its three threads.

You assume that anything in this site is worth preserving. :)

I imagine that one of the options on the table for the upgrade is a WWIV-based system with Fidonet access.

I remember going to CSW 15 or so years ago and feeling like I was too young to be on it.
