Wargame Estate Sale

I happened across this. Sad story. TLDR: Guy dies young and his daughter needs to have her Uni paid for, so his local gaming club got together and helped his wife organize an online auction for vintage games.

Someone please tell Andy, I doubt he’d like to miss this.

Yeah, I took a look but it's all been split into lots too big for me to go after. I appreciate they don't want to have to ship to 200 locations, but I don't know how many people will be interested in bidding on 8 boxes of ASL. If you're fully indoctrinated in the game much of that stuff will be duplication, if not you don't want that much to start. Someone will likely need to buy and then resell piecemeal to get the full value and most of that won't go to the original owner.

Much of the inventories I looked at had plenty of duplicate items, sometimes three of the same. The AD&D 2nd Edition bundle needed to be split in two.

A big chunk of role-playing stuff, but the idea of a couple of crates showing up at my house is enough to keep me from bidding even $1.

Anybody know this guy? Someone with this kind of collection must have had a footprint.

I saw this promoted over on the wargamer Facebook pages I follow and I had the same reaction as Say. The lots are too big and only make sense if you plan in flipping most of it.

That computer game lot calls to me but I don't see myself spending what it would probably take.

I figure it lowers the prices to sell it as lots. Everyone is probably thinking the same way you guys are - that it would be too much. I'd suspect that many of those lots will go for the minumum, and you could flip the shit out of them if you were close enough to pick up your win in a minivan or something. Just my 2c. Either way, I figured I'd do a solid for the bereaved by reposting it and do a solid for you fine folks in case someone was interested.

Oh no, not complaining. Worth getting the word out. I think their intention is for the material to get picked up by used game shops. They've indicated they already have put 200 man hours into the effort just to grade and inventory the material (though the guy has an account on BGG that he used strictly as an inventory tool) and that splitting it into smaller parcels would be too much work for volunteers.

I think they'd have done well to pay someone a commission to move it. They'd lose 30% but might pull double the total if they broke the materials out into more digestible lots.

Yeah, you’re not wrong. The problem is that they’d end up with a lot of inventory and have nothing to do with it, I suspect. It’s got to be really rough for the family having a library of shit they have no idea what to do with and that serves only to remind them that their loved one is gone.

I have a basement full of toy trains that testify to that.

If a lot of it is stuff from the 80s and 90s, it isn't worth much these days. The best case scenario would have been to sell it a large convention auction ; a lot of that stuff is probably worth less than the cost of shipping it individually.

Maybe donate it all and get a tax write off...that’s about all I can think of that would be the best solution.

Yeah, I did know about this but I already have basically everything I need.

Flipping is not an option because selling is impossible from here.

Still appreciate the heads up though.
