Mark Herman just announced that Richard Berg is dead.

I wonder how many games he left unfinished.

Well, iirc he finished and passed on his designs in extremely short timeframes generally. I will say that he was an interesting relic of another time, when the designer/developer/publisher division was extremely formal and strong.

Beyond that... I didn't enjoy his games and his online persona was... abrasive, charitably.

When I typed the question I almost deleted it, half expecting someone to answer "all of them." But I opted to leave it up anyway. Very prolific.

I never bumped into him online.

He treated the people who bought his games poorly.

I hated almost everything he designed and he was a grade A jackass. But I do fee that his commitment to accuracy, detail, and simulation was influential and sometimes even inspiring.

But between Godzilla Kaiju Wars and the remake of Blackbeard, he put out probably the two worst games of the past 20 years.

I encountered Richard Berg in a debate about the serious balance issue in his Waterloo game (Phalanx Games). It was clear he did not understand how to play his own game. He'd then suggest that the written rules were incorrect and present new ones. When it was pointed out that his (off-the-cuff?) changes made the situation WORSE, he'd resort to name-calling.

He was an asshole.

I have fond (but, alas, distant) memories of Successors 3rd Edition. I thank him for those. RIP.

You guys might want to read Dune again. You're supposed to say something good at someone's wake.

Forgot Successors was codesigned by him! That's the only Berg I've ever been interested in besides maybe Pax Romana.

I quite enjoy the GBoH series. I have never interacted with him online, but I think GBoH was a solid design.

I did not enjoy the Men of Iron series though, which really is not that dissimilar from GBoH.

LOL.

Goes to wargaming site...
RICHARD BERG HAS PASSED AWAY... BEHOLD THE GREAT MAN, LONG MAY HE LIVE IN OUR HEARTS AS THE BEST OF HIS KIND.

Goes to FAT/TWBG...
RICHARD BERG HAS PASSED AWAY...
Eh, screw him.

Although not the world's biggest grognard, I think my lasting memory of Berg games was typically thinking, "Okay, this looks pretty good, rules look doable, alright I think I'm ready to..." and then some fiddly exception or chrome overlay gets introduced and I give up & pack it all in.
