I have never seen it or played it, and I know nothing about it, but do I need to?

One just has to love the various potato references. Potato Man carries a peeling fork to which the O in form of a potato is attached.
The subtitle reads "a waxy trick-taking game", whereas festkochend is a category of potatoes - those who maintain a certain thickness when cooked - and "Stich" is a double entendre, referring to both a "trick" and also a method to check whether a potato is well done.
This is going to be a strong 7.

Apart from the awesome illustration, I love the following things:
1. the root (sorry) idea for the whole game seems to be a silly pun based on the fact that the German word for trick is the same as the German word for potato-stabbing
2. there is a German word for potato-stabbing
3. the German language has an adjective whose specific purpose is to describe the waxiness of a potato
4. the potato joke makes absolutely no sense when removed from the context of the German language, but Zoch decided to go with it anyway
I guess Zoch can do this because they publish the international editions of their own games.
Humor doesn't translate well. Lots of (non-Zoch) games nowadays are co-productions involving several publishers, and spanning many countries and languages, so there's a kind of Esperanto homogeneity to them. National character (and just plain goofiness) have been eradicated in order to achieve larger scales of economy. It's a shame.

- festkochend: potatoes which remain solid when cooked
- mehligkochend: potatoes which become mushy when cooked
- vorwiegend festkochend: a sort of cross between the two types above

To be a little more precise, "Kartoffel stechen" refers to the process of stabbing a potato (with a knife or similar item), while they are cooking to check if they're done. "Stechen" also means taking a trick.Juniper wrote: 2. there is a German word for potato-stabbing
There are in fact three terms:3. the German language has an adjective whose specific purpose is to describe the waxiness of a potato
- festkochend: potatoes which remain solid when cooked
- mehligkochend: potatoes which become mushy when cooked
- vorwiegend festkochend: a sort of cross between the two types above

To be frank, the English language is in dire need of adjectives and nouns. Specially the latter.
