I played Yspahan, and liked the dice mechanism. Then I played Alien Frontiers and liked it again. So perhaps there's something interesting that I'm missing.

Any games of the kind you would recommend? And why? Or is everything uninteractive and souless?

Stone Age.......

Seriously though, I really like Saint Malo. You have an opportunity to be a real douche in that game.

The thing with Yspahan and AF are, they are dice games in which the existence of the other players matters beyond just "there are only 3 glurbles and yet there are four players so someone will not get a glurble." You look at pap like Roll Through the Ages and To Court the King and it's all bullshit themed Yahtzee where your turn is merely a brief respite from watching other people roll dice. I have no problem with Yahtzee, played solo (it's how I amused myself in boring D&D games) but I'd rather play it than Roll Through the Ages since it cuts right to the chase.

The other dice game I'd throw in as being worth the trouble is Ra: The Dice Game. It's another one that goes beyond themed Yahtzee and works the other players into the game. Folks compare Alien Frontiers to Kingsburg which isn't a bad game (especially with some of the expansion stuff) but I think a better comparison is to Alea Iacta Est, which is more directly like AF but, in my opinion, not quite as good. I also like Dice Town but it's not quite as bluff-y as I thought it would be.

A lot of the newer Euro dice games, like the Stefan Feld stuff, involves dice, but every step has been taken to insulate beardos from the terrifying specter of actually random events, so there are usually a thousand ways to mitigate or alter the dice rolls so that the point of having dice in the first place is eliminated and gamers can be reassured that only their beautiful minds resulted in their victory (unless they lose, in which case it's still too random.)

Here are my quick picks:

Carson City -- worker placement town building game set in the Old West where you can shoot it out for the worker placement spots. Best Western game out there

Dominant Species -- worker placement with a twist. Players can cover more than one spot. Good theme, random element pulls from the bag and cards keeps it from being another boring worker placement

Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island -- coop from Portal games in Poland being distributed here by ZMan. Euro at its sould but with a very cool theme and random animals and events to keep things interesting.

Dominant Species is a great game, but doesn't include any dice...

Never played, but I heard great things about Castles of Burgundy. Yeah it's Feld. I really have to try this one.
