I think the original theme for Lords of Waterdeep was bakeries competing to corner the market on croissants in an obscure French town. Hasbro opted to change it to a Dungeons & Dragons setting, which only required changing the image on the box cover and calling the purple cubes "wizards" instead of "blueberries". If they hadn't put a pretty picture of Waterdeep underneath the locations on the board you'd have no idea what it was about, and frankly all the cubes piled in the middle of the board covered the pretty picture.

So I'm issuing a challenge -- find a better theme for Lords of Waterdeep. Some options I've knocked around so far:

- Blimp factories in 1920s Germany. Vie for contracts and precious helium supplies. Mandatory quests . . . should be obvious.

- Girl Scout cookie sales in a small, high strung, upper-middle-class suburban town with only three Starbucks to sell in front of. Fifty cents per box means the current game's scoring track wouldn't need to be changed.

- Dark Age churches offering redemption options at bargain basement prices. Holy relics are key to landing the souls of paying customers, and let's face it -- Stations of the Cross is a perfect fit for the buildings in this game.

- Quilt clatches fighting for space and attention at a convention, engaging in the kind of no-holds-barred to-the-death competition that only 75-year-old women that aren't afraid to die can bring. Corner particular fabric colors to screw over Edna and her mustache-growing sisters in a game where you win, or you're shamed.

I'm all ears for alternatives and will make a donation to F:At in the name of the person submitting the best replacement skin.

I would definitely pursue the indulgences theme. That actually sounds way more fun.

You could re-theme it as a game about various game companies pushing different versions of the same old rpg. TSR vs WotC vs Paizo vs etc. The various wooden cubes could represent different product lines.

So is Waterdeep so bad that it can't be salvaged?
