I've been tracking this game for awhile now. I'm not crazy about the art direction, but otherwise this looks promising.

They need to let the Steam Punk artwork genre fade into oblivion.

I'm surprised they didn't call it Mission: Gear World or Mission: Planet Steam. The original game's artwork was fantastic, this is a pretty huge step backwards in my opinion.

The original game owned the steam punk style, down to the font on the numbers. It had a sort of Art Nouveau thing going on and some "Voyage Dans La Lune."

The FFG edition looks like the visual designer was allergic to steam punk but couldn't come up with an evocative style, so they decided to make the fonts more generic and the character designs look more like contemporary cartoons.

I like the new art. Looks more coherent than the original. I also like that the ships are now cards. The original cardboard ships didn't really add anything to the game except their size/thickness. Cards make more sense, just like they did when FFG moved the item chits to cards for Red November 2nd Edition. Hopefully it comes in a small square Red November sized box.

I really loved the old art. It reminded me of Space 1899 quite a bit, which I have a fair amount of love for, in a very nostalgic way.

WADE: What the hell are you talking about with the chits from Red November? What?

Little write-up by Faidutti on the new edition. Looks like a lot of changes. I sold our old edition a while back; I might pick this one up.

edit: English is about half-way down at the linked page.

Perhaps this was a Freudian slip, but I originally read the title of this thread as FFG FUCKED UP MISSION RED PLANET.

I'd love to see more BGG announcements in this style.

Well, atleast they dumped the wooden cubes. The art direction is a downgrade, however. Better board art though.

This has been one of the worst kept secrets in gaming. Pretty sure the Brunos leaked this last year that FFG was reprinting the game. It's just taken FFG a while to formerly announce the reprint.

I don't hate the new artwork, but it's not great. For me it is certainly a step down. I do think the way the rocket-ship cards fit onto the launch pad is a neat little graphic design touch. Having astronaut minis is a big upgrade. I'm also very interested in some of the rule tweaks for this new edition. Mission: Red Planet is one of my all time favorites and I'll probably pick this up AND hang onto the bad-ass original version. Anyone looking for an area control game with a mean streak like a drunken abusive uncle will be happy with the game. It's a great game that deserves to be in print.

Interesting this is being reprinted. I own the original and remember it being panned at the the time. It will be interesting to see if the new release will receive better reviews due to it being a Fantasy Flight release.

I like the original but If memory serves this is the game Ken Bradford chose to play in his maiden voyage to the Barnes Atlanta game group and it didn't go over very well.

Also, I believe this is the game that Tom Vasel reviewed and said the box cover was hard to get off and was later lampooned for that silly remark, which of course he deserved.
