Just get the new one. The artwork is better than Mayfair, and you get not only the double sided board but a couple of good variant options that are actually very worthwhile. The plastic pieces are very nice (still miss the wooden ziggurats) and overall I'd say it's the definitive edition all things considered.
It's worth $50 to get the new one over Mayfair, if that's even cheaper now. I never really liked the look of that edition.

Some might call it a negative, but I appreciate the smaller table space footprint of the FFG version.

My Mayfair copy has all the same two-sided board, rules, variants, and pieces as the new FFG release. Box says Mayfair 4116, and I believe it's from around 2008.
Functionally they're identical; get the one that has the price and looks you like best. I happen to like the look of my Mayfair edition.

Actually, I think I have Uba's old copy from a math trade or sale or something.
Regardless, I find it a great game just as it is, and the components and art don't bother me at all. I like the little wood ziggurats.
Definitely recommend getting a copy, regardless of edition. It's an all-time great.

The component quality is a wash (great in either version) but the artwork is prettier on the FFG board.
Also, the way the conflicts are explained in the FFG rulebook is a lot easier to absorb for new players.
