I've come to find I like the games inspired by TS more than TS itself. For one thing, I'm absolute crap at it, and being crap means you lose early and often and don't get many chances to get better. Second, it's just looooooong, and it's a long play of "I put something here." "I remove it." "I put it back." "I remove it." "I put it back."

I should play against the app more often to get better at it, but it's just not appealing to me to do so.

Hey, that's exactly how the cold war worked. Thematically it's stunning.

Then again, the cold war sucked. Everyone hated it. So, good point.

I picked up a first printing on the cheap and have yet to play a full game of it. Even in my short play (at about 2am at a gaming weekend when I was completely spent) I got that feeling of "all the work I did just got undone" that isn't terribly rewarding. Not sure it was the best pickup for me personally, even at the cheapskate price.

The game works a bit better when you're experienced enough to know what a good hand looks like and when to give up on a country and not put good money after bad. It does a lot less "take one off, put one in" or influence race stuff. Small consolation, though. It's still what surprises me about TS being so popular, it is a game that demands experience and repeat plays. And card memorization.

The thing that surprises me most of that game is “making the most out of an awful hand” is actually pretty fun. A situation which is brutal in Magic and just about any other card driven game

the add one/remove one syndrome is worse in 1960:The making of the President. helps you to appreciate TS.

The worst time for this is early war, if two of the three scoring cards have come out already. both you and your opponent will focus on the remaining area going back and forth. Especially terrible if its Europe that's left, since likely there will not be any coups allowed.

Otherwise the multiple scoring cards allow for a lot of bluffing and counter play across the globe. Sometimes you have to just give up on an area temporarily, to focus somewhere else.

I don't remember the game much for "put something", "remove it", type game-play, but I do remember it had a lot of tricks and tactics one had to learn to become any good at it. If I'm not mistaken, removing the other player's chits except through event cards and coups isn't a good investment of OPs.

yeah, it's usually only done RIGHT before Scoring to grab control of a spot and flip that chit, yo

I think I remember that removing influence completely from a certain area was pretty decent tactic too. Haven't played for years. If only there was a digital version...
